The heroism in Beethoven's "heroic" Symphony No. 3 can take many forms. Often the music is interpreted brashly and tensely, bursting with boundless energy. Bernard Haitink's reading in a performance from October 2012 was dominated by a different characteristic: an energy that comes from inner peace and authority. You can find out more background information about this concert in our interval talk with Bernard Haitink and Matthew Hunter, viola player with the Berliner Philharmoniker.
