Volvo EX40 Electric 2025 review (XC40 Recharge RWD)

NOTE: Some spec detail has changed since I filmed this review!

The electric Volvo XC40 has just been (or is about to be) renamed to be the EX40, bringing it into line with the smaller EX30 compact EV, and the range-topping EX90 large electric SUV.

What does it mean?? Well, originally the plan at Volvo Australia was to end the XC40, and transition to just the EX40. But instead, the brand has now confirmed it will continue to offer ICE / petrol versions with mild-hybrid tech for the XC40 line-up.

Watch the review and tell me if you think it's worth that much!

I think this is incorrect info, Matt. My understanding is that the dual and single motor versions now have the same trim. Also, dual motor is $82k, a $5k difference. And the single motor gets a bigger battery.

Hi Matt, thx for the review. We were on the verge of buying the single motor EX40 but your comments about the average ride comfort have made us second guess. If we wanted an EV of a similar size but wanted to emphasise ride comfort which EV would you recommend.

Enjoy your car reviews - thank you. Would LOVE it though if you'd include boot measurements as a standard feature (how wide between the wheel arches is 340 liters???). As an artist I need to transport large (often framed) canvasses so this info is vital when making a purchase decision. I've only ever seen one other reviewer that has done this. I live regionally - so dashing to a dealer with a tape measure is not always an easy thing for me to achieve. Would love you to consider this as an inclusion.

We picked Volvo XC 40 drives much better than other s mentioned and was a lot more solid than BMW X1 which seemed really loosey goosey to Drive.

Am surprised you didn't mention the absence of driver alert bings & bongs like other Chinese manufactured EVs. Must be that famous Matt size 14 boot affecting the efficiency as the Mrs drive a Twin Recharge & it have averaged 19.3kWh/100kms over 9125kms. Its a shame the wool seats didn't make it to China factory as the wet suit leather is rather sticky in Perth summer.

Not particularly a Volvo fan, and most likely that's irrational, but it's a brand that I've never really gravitated to. I think the Skoda Enyaq is a great option, and looks a lot better than this example. It's sooo boring.
