Tesla Model Y - Martian Wheels MW03 Delivers Range and Efficiency Gains

Our Tesla Model Y has been such a joy to own and besides a few areas, this car has been amazing. One of those areas is the suspension, which leads to a more harsh ride than most would expect from a car in this price range.

Having the Induction Wheels on the Tesla Model Y is not a help to the overall ride comfort as they come with a very small sidewall. The Gemini wheels do allow for a thicker tire, but they do not look great. Aftermarket options seem to be the best place to look for alternatives.

If you have a Tesla Model 3 or a Tesla Model Y, you likely have heard about Martian Wheels. Where most aftermarket wheels are flow formed, Martian Wheels are true forged wheels, which means unsurpassed weight savings and strength. This process is more expensive, which usually means a much bigger price tag. But with Martian Wheels, there is minimal overhead to keep the prices down as much as possible.

I have wanted these wheels for 2 years now and am so happy I finally have them! I opted to for the 18" wheels to maximize potential range improvements. After completing a baseline range test with the Induction wheels, I am able to compare these 18" MW03 wheels now.

I was able to achieve about 5% more efficiency with these wheels. This is a combination of weight and a narrower tire, by almost 1". With the narrower tire and lighter wheel, improvement in range was obvious, but the ride comfort by having additional side wall on the tire was substantially better than the low profile tires fitted on the induction wheels.

I bought these MW03 Martian Wheels on your recommendation Justin and one of them has a paint defect, and Martian won't take it back/replace it. Pisses me off royally.

I’ve watched this video like 10 times lol I reached out to Marian Wheels and they are putting together a custom tire and wheel package for me. I’m getting these 18” wheels with eRange EV Powerline tires that are the same size as yours. I’m excited!! Awesome company to work with, super customer service so far for sure. Very quick communication.

Finally someone took one for the team, according to Bjorn, 18inch wheel is better than 19inch on MY for comfort and efficiency, more meat the better. Did you put the wheels on yourself or someone else did it for you? I have the same tires on my 19in Gemini wheels, I got around 279Wh/mi in LA traffic. That's an at least $4.5k upgrade that you did. The OEM tires only lasted 25k miles. Pirelli P7 AS PLUS 3 has 70k miles warranty compare to the OEM 40k miles warranty and Tesla doesn't offer OEM tire warranty.

Love my Martian Wheels. I went with the 19 inch but narrower to help with curb rash. I did get the Michelins, TPMS, mounted balanced and delivered from Drew. So worth it.

Been waiting for a nice efficiency comparison for Martian wheels. Well done. They also look fantastic.

Thanks for the video and info BTG! I ordered the MW03 wheels using your discount code. I got Michelin Defender 2 235 55R 18 tires installed this past weekend.
The ride is so much better!!

You should link this in your "Tesla Model Y - Better Tires for All Seasons" video. I'm glad I found it and heard your update on the Vredestein

Great content here! I have a MYP and was looking to increase the range and comfort. Went back and forth for so long between Martian Wheels and some of the others. Some online reviews mentioned that Gemini wheels on MYP would provide 20 miles more of range. But Tesla does not sell Gemini wheels to those who have a MYP. And then I decided to pull the trigger on EV01+ because that is the closest to Gemini with similar aero covers. I went with the 19" wheels because that's the smallest size they offer for Model Y Performance. And I got 255/45/19 Michelin Cross Climate 2's (all weather). And after 1500 miles I am getting about 5% efficiency gain. About 17 miles more range overall and definitely more comfortable ride quality with a 19" wheel. Note: I was also checking the size of tire and the tire options available on the 18" MW03 and the 19" EV01+. I could not find the Michelin Cross Climate 2 for 18" wheel size that would fit the Martian wheels. And so I decided to go with the 19" Ev01+. I am not sure how much range efficiency I would see on an MYP with the 8.5" wide MW03 with 255/50/18 or a 255/45/18. Kyle and i1Tesla have done speed and range test with a MW03 on a 7.5" width wheel size. That is a custom size created by Martian for Out of Spec Motoring.

Can’t believe I missed this video drop. Great advice as always!

I read the tesla wheels were cast. I had the choice between Martian wheels and tsportline and while the Martian support more weight I went with tsportline wheels instead. I think to build the package with Martian wheels it was close to 4K.

Tsportline has 18’s that fit the MYP.

Didn't know you could put 18 inch rims on the Model Y. Good to know.

Martian wants bank for wheels.... For my MYP I went with the 19" Drag DR-80 and Crossclimate2's from Discount tire. At 2200 the whole package was well less than just the price of the Martian wheels. The ride is significantly better than the stock uberturbine's, i installed the new wheels and tires in April and haven't put the Ubers back on yet. I bought the new set back when Tesla was sending the MYP with summer tires. In Chicago suburbs that wont work, so the extra set was meant to be a winter set, but my car came with all seasons on the Ubers. But like I said I like the 19s so much that I haven't put the ubers back on.

I have the same 18" MW03 matte finish on my 2021 MY long range and love them. The wheels are around ~18.5 lbs each, which is about 10 lbs lighter than the stock Gemini. I run a set of Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus and in mixed city/highway driving average around 295 miles of range. I drove on the Gemini for awhile, and though not bad the larger tires on the current setup do offer a noticeably better ride quality. A set of 4 right now (October 2022) would run you around $2380 USD. Also, these wheels don't jut out like the stock Tesla wheels, so a bit tougher to curb for those clumsy drivers like me.

These wheels and tire sets cost $3, 500+… if you had 20” induction wheels before, this is a hefty upgrade.. improved range and efficiency are okay, but if you actually calculate the difference in electricity bill, it’s only about $2-$3 saving per month… it will take over 1000 months of charging to break even for the money you spent on these martian wheels. I think MAIN benefit of doing these 18” or 19” wheels is solely improved ride comfort

I like them. I'm glad you like them. For me they're not distinct enough from the stock wheels. But they still look good.

Thx for info BTG. I’ve never been so crazy about tire options until this car. Harbor Freight had their 1.5T aluminum racing jacks on sale the other day for $87/ea. I bought 4 so I can put all 4 wheels in the air at same time. Haven’t done it yet but getting excited for my first rotation! Lol.

Putting these on will make it faster 0-60 as well. You will just sacrifice handling around the corners. I believe 19 inch martians on a MYP made it from 3.5-3.6 to a 3.28 0 to 60 which is really impressive.

Nice wheels I almost bought them but went with T Sportline 18” wheels for my 22 Y Performance.
