As a Japanese, I know this as a cat repellent. People know that this is not scientifically proven, but this tells the neighbors (who have the cats as pets) that their cats are not welcome on the property because of their business

We do it in our country to stop animals from defecating in the area

I found this…Known as 'nekoyoke' (cat repellants), the bottles are apparently there to stop cats from doing their business. The prevailing idea is that light would break through the water and act as a mirror or kaleidoscope, which would in turn scare away cats.

During the 70’s recession in USA, we put filled bottles out in the winter to freeze. Added to a freezer, it kept it from running as much. Also a one quart container filled with water was added to a toilet tank saved a quart of water with every flush.

Cats around my home would be taking turns to see which one can knock over the most while laughing. lol. 😜🤭😼😹

You should look the origin it is quite funny.
Started on a 1st of April. A interview made in Australia. A scientist joked saying that water is repellant of cats so putting a bottle of water on your front door could avoid too much cats.
This idea grew big in Japan then expended in the world.
Science experiments made afterwards all concluded that it does not have any impact.

I think it would also stop stray dogs as well as cats! That looks like a great idea! For all that shared! Even about their countries! It’s all so interesting! I love to learn about others and their stories!

In Malaysia, we would hang water bottles like these with a string near our windows, entrances, or put them on garden fences to repel crows, pigeons, flies, or cats. Perhaps they are also using water bottles for a similar purpose in Japan.

In South Africa we use a similar concept to keep stray animals away.

My last thought would be this is some “High tech” thing. Also, how far we’ve strayed as a society that a resource so vital and sparse in some places, is used to stop ANIMALS from relieving themselves OUTSIDE.

Here ithought there just might be hope for humanity, then I read the comments and find out its not for the elderly and homeless to keep themselves safe on hot days😢

They were doing that in Osaka 30 years ago. House owners fill the bottles the night before to let chlorine evaporate [no lid], so very early in the morning they water their garden plants before the sun is too hot, which would scold the leaves. I water my camelia, hibiscus, olive, jasmine and honeysuckle with rice water. I save empty water bottles to store rice water overnight. My plants love it.

In my country we also do this as cat repellant. But not in clear water. We make the water red in colour... not too much red. Crystal clear water with in red.

Malaysian also using this kind of way. Also we add a little bit of coloring. Some use red. Some use yellow. 😅
