This changed my perspective completely. Just bought my second S2000 and was thinking of spending close to 400 a day at the track to see if I have a clue. Now I spend 25 at the Kart track and see if I have any skill before dropping 400 and beating the shit out of my car. Thanks

I went carting once, then immediately after I had to drive some people around, and they started puking because I was driving like a maniac without me even realising it. So I agree that carting can help a lot

F1 drivers start off racing karts so that should tell you what you need to know.

I thought you were going to mention tires

Gran Turismo 1 and 2 literally taught me how to drive. specifically grinding through the liscence tests helped me understand how cars with different engine layouts and power would react to the same driving situation

For my self, the best mods I can put into any car is:
1: The driver. The driver is the best modification and most important one for any vehicule. Stick a good driver in a bad car, and watch that thing fly. Mental clarity, physical health and experience all contribute hugely to becoming a better driver.

2: The tires: mechanically the most important mod you can have on any car, hands down. This doesn't mean slap the stickyest tires money can buy. You need the right tire for the specific type of car you are driving, situation (climate) and driving style.

3: Driver operational dynamics: This includes all touch point inputs, seating, mirrors and visibility (etc). Have this in the right combination for your driving style, body type and you can potentially create a fed-back loop of confidence in your driving style.

Great video...I actually never really considered the karting thing would improve my driving that much, but after hearing your recommendation I think I'm gonna head over to my local indoor karting track. Thanks!

Does driving a miata count as karting?

But...but...butt... Need for Speed told me I need headers, cat back exhaust, short throw shifters, light weight flywheels, carbon ceramic brakes with 10 pistons, cross drilled and slotted rotors, direct injection nitrous, big wings, Enkei wheels, Altezza lights, custom candy paint, sticker bomb it with decals, underglow... Did I miss anything? :P

Pretty sure a v8 tt swap and nitrous are the first two mods. You don't need to be a better driver when you have 1000hp. And you don't need to be a better driver if your car is in the shop all the time, you can just tell people how good you are instead.

These are really great tips! I'm 22 and I'm definitely a function over form kind of guy and I think I'm already in that upper echelon of better drivers. I've been to a track on a motorcycle, but never in a car. I was really expecting you to say something like brake pads, fluid, suspension, and tires, but you kind of completely blew me away. It's similar with motorcycles. All the top riders, like in MotoGP, have all trained on minibikes at some point or still do. I've actually done a minimoto trackday myself and learned an insane number of things. I honestly completely forgot that karting and these types of events existed lol. I'm going to have to join some club or something. It really is kind of pointless to spend all that money on a street car, which in most cases (unless you're just rich as fuck) isn't meant to be a crazy fast track car or whatever. You never get all that money back, your car becomes more unreliable, you're probably going to get more tickets, and just end up wasting your money, and not become a better driver. Track events are pretty expensive at least here in L.A. at least for me. I'm gonna look into karting and minimoto events again. You're right. Thanks for the reminder to just go back to the basics! :)

1. Drive in a parking-lot when it's wet or icy with no other cars or posts and practice turning, drifting, stopping, and launch to get limits in-check.
2. Get better tires, preferably a summer and then a winter set grippier and lighter than stock.
3. Buy an instructor-guided track-day where the car is included (you can use yours, however if lower-speed)

This is great advice. Im 33 yrs old now. When i was in my 20's all my friends were into cars. We all had our favorites. I was personally a Neon SRT4 guy....None of us really got into "driving" though. It was all about making the car faster (not becoming a better driver)....i got spanked at the drag strip by less powerful cars bc i didnt know how to launch properly. Reaction times werent the greatest and just wasnt as good of a driver....As ive gotten older, i realized that having a cool car isnt as important. Im still a car guy, but my mindset has changed. Its not a bout the coolest or fastest car, but more about the driving experience now. Several years after owning the SRT4, i picked up a 99 Miata. Much less powerful, but the Miata is a drivers car. Not about speed or power, but the overall experience. Cruising with the top down. Banging through the gears on the open road in what is essentially an oversized go kart. I enjoyed the Miata more bc it was more simple and it was more fun to drive at the limit. The SRT could be a handful bc it was a fwd torque steering monster lol.

Does running through the grocery store with a cart count? I can take end of aisle apexes like a pro. I can cart through the mid isle display chicanes like they wasn't even there and when an old lady tries to get in front of me at checkout we trade paint like I was Dale Fukin Earnhardt reincarnated. Plus I have watched Driven starring Stallone over a thousand times.
