You might be wondering What is GD&T? The short answer is "it's a system of dimensioning and tolerancing from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers which allows you to know with 100% certainty that your parts will fit and function within their next-level assembly. For a bit more detail watch this short 10 minute video!

Fully Detailed Drawing:

This video was created to help beginners rapidly understand GD&T and quickly use the concepts in practical applications. Technical vocabulary was purposefully NOT used in an attempt to convey these topics to those who do NOT have a background in GD&T.

You are meant to be an educator man! I love how you explain from zero without assuming we know anything which is always comfortable to brush off things we know and build on it with new information.

These are the BEST videos on GD&T. I am a Mechanical Engineer (30+ yrs) and now a QC Engineer by the way. Thank you and great work.

I’m a retired mechanical engineering manager. We did not have assembly problems with the classical tolerance system. Converted to GD&T because that was the way the wind was blowing. Led to endless ‘discussions’ among the designers and burned through hours trying to figure it out. (And we had GD&T classes). On balance, it was a loser for our (mainly cylindrical) parts and assemblies. Use GD&T where needed, where NEEDED.
I think a thesaurus of GD&T assemblies and parts might be useful as a reference.

GD&T newb here. Best GD&T intro video I found so far. The way you explained mating surfaces as interfaces clarified for me what datums are and how they are used. You got my sub. I'll be watching more.

This video on YouTube is truly awesome. CAD/CNC/CMM imply to design, shop-floor manufacturing and quality control (QC) inspection/open setups or digital verifications. Thanks for a great 10 Minute video. We have a number of students at the Chippewa Valley Technical College review this (Albuquerque-New Mexico) training video (YouTube).

I got some background on GD&T but needed to get to very didactic material that helped me to refresh my knowledge and these videos really get straight to the point. Thank you guys.

Wow, this explanation is awesome. In just a few minutes it helped me understand not only benefits but in an easy way some tips how parts/assembly fits and how the Standard relates with them. Thanks a lot, greetings from Venezuela.

Great Video. I think one thing that I would have added to point 6, is that its important that all people involved WANT to use GDnT, instead of traditional methods of tolerancing. Also its worth noting that the trade off in using GDnT is more time spent interpreting drawings at every level. Once you have your head around the system its really not an issue though

One other important point is correct use of GD&T ensures quality which in turn ties in to point number two... time and money. Great video, keep up the good work!

hats off. That is the kind of engineers i love, making complex things simple, also showing they trully understand what they are aplying :)

I really like your tutorial. It's very simple and so easy to understand. It's like, even a non-mechanical background person can also understand.
