Yesterday I got 2nd place in the Geography Bee in my school, and I'm a finalist. I'd like to dedicate this to Geography now. I couldn't have done it without you, nor found such an interest in the world around me!

African Country's Names in english - Name in Portuguese -what the name means in english

Cameroon -Camarões - shrimp
Gabon - Gabão - cloak
Sierra Leone (actually resembles spanish) -Serra Leoa - Lioness Mountains
Cape Verde - Cabo verde
Ivory Coast - Costa do Marfim
Gambia - Gâmbia - from the portuguese "Câmbio" meaning "trade"
Contless Guineas - guinea kinda means rich place, or place of the blacks
Madagascar - from "Madeigascar"; Marco Polo's name from his book given to the island in 1502 by the Portuguese

I'm sure there's more, but I think it's enough to help get you an idea of how many contries have their name from the Portuguse langage and don't even realize it.
