My local GMC dealer had an Electric Hummer for sale a few months ago for $295, 000. It sold - that was something like a $150k markup on the $140k list price. Ridiculous and embarrassing .

the massive markups are being put on a lot of cars, not just EVs. actually, it's kind of a crazy trend. I'm amazed people are buying these cars.

but then, as John Wayne said, "life is hard. it's harder when you're stupid."

I've been expecting this to happen. It's finally -- for better or worse -- the end of the U.S. independent auto dealer franchise system. This will quickly sweep the industry. At the moment, there are not enough cars to go around, anyway. It's the perfect time to break, remake, and consolidate the dealer system.

I'd rather go to the dentist than my Ford dealer.

I've seen this first hand with this price gouging. I detail GM and Ford vehicles as the two dealerships are owned by the same person/company in my town. The msrp for the Lightning xlt was ~$72, 000 cad. The customer was charged $15, 000 cad over msrp. I say that is a ripoff

Ford fired their previous CEO for not focusing on electric vehicles and implementing changes fast enough. In 2 years Ford got Mach-e, Lightning and the electric Transit van. That is good progress for two years w Jim Farley. Now taking on dealerships.

when I read this I thought of Nissan dealer supposedly having fast chargers available to the public. When I got my leaf I was very disappointed to try 3 different dealers to find all of them had no public chargers, yes they all bought them and installed them but they iced them with dealer vehicles and had them turned off... so I wonder if Ford will do better.

Even without the markups dealers will still be pushing all the unnecessary add-ons and fees. Dealerships need to be eliminated...period.

The dealership laws might be only based on ICE only. There was serious talk about dividing Ford into 2 entities. Ford sees the success Tesla is having.Farley is making the right moves

A really gutsy move by Farley. You say they had no choice, but they did and they made the bold one. Not making a decision is still making a decision. I'm kind of amazed.

1976 I worked in the parts department of the local Ford dealer that had started under Henry Ford. That dealership went to be a multi brand dealership at least 25 years ago. There will be a need for replacement parts for the ones still on the road for a long time. Henry Ford told every dealer exactly what to do or they were out. Same as now.

Good. every single time I have dealt with a dealership, even if I got a decent deal, I always feel dirty and used when leaving with the car. I hate dealing with them.

Does it say that they can't tack on all these extra charges?

It seems smart to raise expectations for dealers, but it's weird to build that around fast charging. Car dealers are not located in convenient locations for fast charging, and most people do not need to fast charge except on road trips, especially in America where more people have off street parking. Would make more sense to require an electrician at every dealer to handle home charging.

Dealers will probably sue Ford, but it needs to be done to compete with Tesla.

100% Behind this In Southern California we have HUGE markups even after ordering it in advance Dealer Options is their con job. They get your vehicle already ordered by you then they slap on a bunch of " Options " and try to get you to foot the bill

Message to ANYONE who thought this was never going to
This was ALWAYS going to happen.
And it won't just be Ford, or for the reasons cited.
.
I've said for a while, you'll be buying cars in a "supermarket"
With all brands under one roof.
With "salaried" staff.
With a "flat" commission going to the outlet.
Their money will come from extras like wheel upgrades, Body wraps (color/ protection), and other extras to personalise your car.
EDIT
And as mentioned elsewhere in the thread, home charger installation services!
You go to buy car, you're offered a "discount" on a professionally installed home charger "compatible with the car you're interested in"
(You will of course, if you have ANY sense, immediately look for other options....$$$$)

There are lots of parts that still will wear out, Suspension parts, cooling parts, a/c heating systems, charge controllers, computer systems, they still have cv joints and half shafts that go bad, and even the electric motors will go bad. they will swap them out like they do when an gas engine goes bad. sure it won't have spark plugs and other parts but if you look at an EV there are still lots of serviceable parts that the dealers will work on.

I do support what Ford is doing. It sends a great message to shape up or ship out. The dealership gouge pricing on everyday vehicles is ridiculous. They're not selling a limited run from Koenigsegg.

I wish it was done sooner, and to all vehicles, we used to be a ford family, I've owned dozens of ford's. My youngest child in college in Chicago, we live in So Cal . She wanted a maverick or bronco . We went shopping for the maverick the cheapest we could find national search was $6, 000.00 over MSRP and the highest was at villa ford for $25, 000.00 over MSRPthats on a $27, 000.00 car so the maverick was $53, 0000.00
The broncos were $15, 000.00 over to as HIGH as $50, 000.00 over MSRP
She bought a GMC Canyon for $3, 500.00 under MSRP
I'm planing on getting a EV truck, I was going to sell my f250 superduty crew cab and get the ford 🌩 EV . The dealer passed me off so much, I'm planing on getting a GM electric truck
No more ford the damage is done with me .also I'm older so I won't buy too many new vehicle's, but my daughter 19 and she just as up set. At first she tried to rationalize, that how it is buying a new vehicle. I kept telling her NO it not, once I got her to look at GMC we had four dealer fighting to sell at MSRP or less .I think she understand now it was creed. And won't buy a ford. Within the next year I'll be selling two ford vehicles and purchasing two new other then ford EVs
