Watch This Before You Buy A Porsche 718 Spyder

I jump behind the wheel of a 2020 Porsche 718 Spyder, the third generation of the Boxster Spyder.

From the moment it launched, I fell in love with the looks of the 718 Spyder so I was super excited to experience it. Finally this generation of the car is nearly mechanically identical to it's hard topped brother, the GT4. With a naturally aspirated 4.0l flat-six engine putting out over 400hp, it should be one of the best cars you can buy under £100,000.

I have never for one moment been bored or unimpressed with the new 718 Spyder. Possibly the best sports car available.

I have a 2023 Spyder. I love the roof. Adds to the engagement of the most special Porsche. If you don’t OWN ONE, you won’t understand

This is genuine open question and not a criticism - I was wondering whether you (& other YouTubers) have become blasé with cars? You get to experience these incredible machines so frequently that the “meh” factor is closer to the surface than someone who may only ever get to drive a special car once in their lives. Again, not a criticism, it is human nature to a certain extent.

This video illustrates what I've been saying about car reviewers for years. They're only good for a year or two, still excited about new cars, and able to express their enthusiasm without clouding it with supercars experiences.

Once someone get behind the wheel of the very best of the very best, or at least the fastest of the fastest, it's only natural to look at other cars has a little less.

That would be fine if you're speaking to an audience of fellow car reviewers or people who have driven everything and can relate. Most audiences however, consists of dreamers like myself, who wants to know just how great it is to get behind the wheel of a car like this one, 400 horsepower, convertible, mid-engine Porsche, and loving it for what it is and not at what it is not.

Very few reviewers resist the jading that is quite natural.

I spent a day flogging the 718 Spyder on some amazing roads in the hills near Melbourne, it’s an excitement machine, no way I’d get bored of it, order placed!

I think the Spyder is spectacular and if you were lucky enough to get an allocation at list price, possibly the best open top sports car on sale today.

I hate to be critical, but this was a vacuous and superficial review. It was basically, "it's not loud enough and I don't like the gearing, so even though it's fantastic, I wouldn't buy it. " By the way, in the U.S., the sound is fantastic because the exhaust is different. Also, if you weren't raised on turbo charged engines, the gearing is exactly what you'd expect for a NA high powered, high torque motor. That gearing allows you to drive around town without being a nuisance but still enjoy the motor and gear box to the fullest when appropriate without having to shift every 2 seconds to get to 60 mph.

As an owner - all fair comments I reckon. Long gearing hasn’t bothered me yet, but still running it in

Generation one “not that special”. Probably the most special of all. Dude knows better.

A friend just decided to get a spyder and directed me to Sam’s video - the second I heard the voice I yelled “Seen through glass”. She was impressed at my Kreskin impression though I’ve been a big fan of the channel for years. Anyway, she picked it up yesterday, insisted I drive it home as she was anxious about taking it on the freeway. I found it’s handling fantastic as well as the throttle response. I have 7 classic Porsches and love it’s refinement. For her, the car will be fantastic for our Porsche events and drives as she is a bit tentative. The car looks and performs beautifully and hats off to Sam as he was apparently the deciding factor in her making the jump.

Love the channel - keep up the great work in putting us in cars and a mindset we would otherwise not experience.

oooh Sam, harsh words about the Gen 1 Spyder, my dads first dip of his toe into the world of Porsche, it was fantastic, really quite aural and alive, it had bags of personality over a standard boxster, he used it as his daily, took it on numerous runs through Europe, down to Southern Italy on one run, over the Stelvio pass ( on a day that had more cycles than cars so it was a steady drive!), the roof wasnt even that much of a pain after a few goes it all worked, he wishes he had have kept it forever, but alas Porsche wanted it back to help get him the next car, which he dutifully bought, which then led him up the garden path for a Speedster, they took him to launch night at hotel, let him sit in one, spec a very personalised one, then he asked to pay the deposit and was told "Geoff, this car isnt for you...." bit harsh I thought, and I know where I would have told the sales team to go, but he stuck with them, now has his allocation on a cherry red Targa Heritage edition coming in the autumn.

To me, it looks like a great car for weekend drives with my husband, out to countryside restaurants or for cruising, always with the roof down with nowhere particular to go. I really like that exact car with that interior. If I had the cash, I'd have it in an instant.

“Not the easiest experience I’ve ever had.”
This car is one of the purest forms of motoring today. A little inconvenience is well worth it.

Save £25-£30k and get the 981 Spyder with one of the best sounding exhausts period. 718 and 981 both great cars but for me 981 edges it with classic simpler lines.

I have owned an F40, (2) Porsche 962 factory race car, altogether 15 Porsche's in my life, this is the best street-legal Porsche ever, so much so I am buying a Speedster just to see the difference, if you can get an allocation, get it Porsche is losing money on everyone they sell.

Sharkwerks can re-gear the car with shorter gearing and can put a proper exhaust on it .. for a price obviously.

This or a GT4 that’s the question tho

Personally I’d take a Hyundai Accent but you know different strokes for different folks

It is the first time I prefer the Spyder than the GT4 because it is the first gen of the Spyder with the GT4's specs and because the car is made for the pleasure, it is probably better to buy/drive it without the roof!

No start stop in the 981. No auto available. No particulate filter. And a bit less punishing suspension. Winner !
