I'm Finnish and like all Finns, I've been force-fed the Moomin propaganda since I fell out of the womb. I mean I've had my hunches about Snufkin and Moomintroll since I was a kid, but when I got old enough to know how to do research and found out that Tove Jansson was a lesbian and based almost all of her stories on her relationship with her girlfriend, it pretty much solidified it for me as part of the canon.

Lets just remember that Tove (the creator of the moomins) was queer and lived there rest of her days with her girlfriend in a cute little house with no electricity that they built in a tiny island
edit: the moomins were based on Tove's real life family and friends (for exemple: little my is a representation of her when she was a child, her girlfriend; Tuulikki was an ispiration for the character Too-Ticky who guides the moomins throughout winter because Tuulikki helped her during her depression, and the characters Thingumy and Bob are a representation of tove and her other girlfriend at the time; Vivica Bandler. the two characters carry a suitcase in wich is hidden a ruby, the ruby was a metaphor for homosexual love.)

I love how it's a theme by now that they get interrupted just when it's a bout to get real. In the second episode of season 2 Moomin is like: "Today is the day, it has to be! We'll soon be cutting the long winter grass by the stream, where he pitches his tent. And once he's lit his fire, he's sure to tell me all about one of his amazing adventures. And then, as the sun sets over Moominvalley, Snufkin and I will..." *Litte My throws a spool at his face*
And in this new episode, Snufkin says "But Moomintroll" - "Yes?" - "I really do..." just when Moominmama interrupts them. The writers know exactly what they are doing. There is no straight explanation for any of this.
And I think the fight in this episode just shows how much they really like each other, and it's really realistic. Every real relationship has struggles like this. It made Snufkin really grow as a person and in their relationship I think. I loved the part where Moomintroll said "It might feel great when you've chosen to be alone, but it's not the same when you haven't." with so much pain in his voice, to which Snufkin turned around and ran after him with "Moomintroll, wait!" That part was just so real and painful, and I think it made Snufkin realise how much Moomintroll loves him and how much he is hurting him with his selfish desire for solitude. I know he needs his alone time, but this episode showed us that he normaly uses his alone time to think about Moomintroll xD
