The Tamron 150-500mm f/5-6.7 Di III VC VXD is an affordable super-telephoto zoom with a focal length that works well for wildlife and sports photography. In this review Dave tests the Sony compatible 150-500mm Tamron lens which works with full-frame E-mount mirrorless cameras or with APS-C bodies in the Alpha range.

I sold my Sony 100-400 and bought this lens plus another lens I've been wanting. This lens is plenty sharp for me when compared to the 100-400. In low light it's a challenge though but that's to be expected. It is heavy and lugging it around for a few hours as a senior photographer can be difficult but overall I'm really pleased with the lens and love the extra 100 MM in reach vs the 100-400

Thanks for this review. Much appreciated. I've never used a lens with this kind of focal length but I think I'm persuaded to go for this Tamron. A lot of info provided here about the alternatives but I think this Tamron suits my needs best. In particular, its build quality, size/weight, tripod bush/ring, image stabilisation, sharpness and affordability. Attention here is centred on 'wildlife' photo opportunities but for me the potential usage of this lens is about people at events where minders keep you at an unsuitable distance - wildlife of a different kind! This lens should overcome such an obstacle.

Great information on this lens. How do you find it for hand holding and how well does the Peak Design strap take the weight off when you're walking with it? Does it really require a tripod or monopod - I'll be 70 this year but I get out 3 to 4 days a week shooting birds and I'm in decent shape. Unfortunately the Sony 70-350 mm lens I have is easy to carry all day but just doesn't have the focal length most of the time that I need.

You do not have to physically unlock the zoom lock with the switch. Push the zoom ring forward to lock and pull it back to unlock. Works great 👍

Looks really exciting, and if bokeh and 20 frames per second plus better autofocus (and internal zoom) with Sony A9 and other top models is not important, then Sigma is a really good choice.
However, I choose to keep my Sony 200-600mm. lens with my Sony A9, although I rarely need 20 frames per second, but the other benefits I will not do without

I wander are this lens perfect for aviation photography? Next month I'm going to air show and thinking about buying this Tamron since my 70-300 feels not enough...

I’m looking for a long lens to get shots and footage of the surfers through these big winter swells. I’m stick between this and the Sigma 100-400.
I’m leaning more towards this though.
What’s is like for fast moving action like surfers, and what’s it like regarding weather sealing?
Also, is it 67mm thread like my other Tamron lenses?

Cheers
