That's exactly what happened to my brother in law in 2001, been sacked as a director of one of a famous food company, just for refusing to accept goods that being expired but labeled as new products, the game is old but our eyes are always open!!!

I look at the ingredient list to make sure there are no genetically modified ingredients. I ignore the best before & look at the use by date instead.

This has two sides exist here. It depends on the situation. For example, many companies, organizations and the like, have stored up can foods for years, which may now be nearing the end of shelve life, but not quite expired. They can still be bought or donated, but keep in mind those can goods would not be able to be stored as long as the previous owners stored them. So, if it's to feed people now, I'm okay with that, but if it's to store for long-term use, then no.

For perishable items, make sure these goods are not being given a new expiration date, when the goods have already expired.

All in all, the best test to determine wheter goods are good or not, is to use the sense of sight, smell and taste, before distribution to larger population.

If it food product then is sometimes not waste especially in countries like India where we offer left extra food and infact traditionally in India we have been offering first Roti to Cows, dogs etc

USA consumers waste quite a lot. It's a known thing. US people never mind spending so much of money on buying food items, mostly packed food.
UK people on contrary, try to save food for next serve. Don't spend much money for various variety of foods.

India's expiry date is if you see mold on the food or smell a foul odor.
