Catch More Bass with These 4 Jerkbait Modifications

While stock jerkbaits catch bass right out of the box, there are times when simple modifications add up to more bites. Pro bass angler Randy Blaukat shares his top jerkbait tweaks to adjust buoyancy, hook short strikers, and adjust for larger fish and fishing around cover.

Randy prefers a suspending or slow sinking jerkbait during the cold-water months. If the bait is too buoyant, it’ll float toward the surface. Blaukat counteracts this by using suspend strips (lead) with adhesive backing. He shares a few pointers on how to secure the weight to the belly of the bait using an abrasive, pocket knife and a dab of super glue.

When it comes to short strikers, Randy explains the importance of setting the rear treble hook back further. He demonstrates how to accomplish this using extra split rings. He also experiments with the addition of red nail polish to create a more prominent target adjacent to the hooks.

Lastly, consider upgrading light-wire hooks to a heavier gauge and larger size when targeting bigger fish or working the bait in and around cover. Beefier hooks can also help achieve neutral buoyancy or slow sink characteristics instead of suspend strips.

Great tips but...geez...he can't cut the suspend strip BEFORE sticking it to the 110?

Been fishing 55 years now. Just got into Jerkbaits. The sizes, colors, rod's, reel's, line etc. How they float or don't. Hook changes. Weight here or there. Even no weight at all! Conditions, clouds, no clouds, Sun or no sun. Twitching and how much Twitching. The bait is the most simple bait. Why so much info. I still have Rapala sinking minnow. Went back cleaned it a little. Put some sticky hooks on the minnow. Bam! It's still catches bass. No fuss. Just fish it! Shawn

Amazing, thanks Randy! It’s about getting the action of a jerkbait bait into a zone that most others can’t. So interesting how many people can’t perceive how to do that because they are messing up their expensive lure.

Some good tips...but using crazy glue to attach lead strips than hacking it off with a dull scissors and than adding nail polish on a $25 jerk bait seems a little bizarre

Why can you add a substance as dense as lead but you can’t use a heavier hook ?
AND THE ADDITIONAL SPLIT RINGS ?
I’m slightly confused.

Another tip, that works on perch, if you get a lot of nibblers, tie some feathers on the last hook, it will slow it down some and get it behind the baitinstead of below it.

Crazy idk if I will do that to a megabass can't afford to spend $25 just to modify it.

I have NEVER had to modify a Rapala Husky Jerk out of the box. OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE at an UNBELIEVABLE PRICE! I'll stick with Rapala jerkbaits.

Good ideas.. but nail polish right there, no curing time? Doesn't the extremely strong solvent smell make fish flee? Seems like something I wouldnt do.

I only fish jerk baits and I'm going to try this

Aint nobody putting 2 or 3 split rings on the back hanger😂

Adding an extra Splitring is a good measure, but don't ruin such an expensive Lure with that ugly strip in the belly section, it's awful 😢 just thread a little bit oft lead wire or soldering wire on the shank of the two belly trebles... it will balance your lure the same way! 😊
