Honor The Legacy-

In this excerpt from "Mere Christianity," C.S. Lewis discusses the vice of pride, which he considers the greatest sin and the root of all other vices. He explains that pride is inherently competitive, leading people to value themselves over others and even over God. Unlike other vices, pride does not foster camaraderie but instead creates enmity. Lewis warns that pride can disguise itself within religious life, causing people to feel superior to others under the guise of righteousness. He emphasizes that true humility involves recognizing and relinquishing pride, not thinking less of oneself but thinking of oneself less.

Pride is so dangerous and beguiling that it can be mistaken for self loathing, where one truly believes they have sinned so great that the Blood of the Lamb of God isn’t sufficient to cover their sins. How arrogant to believe you’re capable of such sin that the Creator Himself cannot forgive from His own sacrifice. This is what I’ve needed to take to heart for a long time

C. S. Louis made a really important distinction between pride and vanity, this was enlightening for me. So many nuggets, but this one is my favorite: “Pride makes people look down on others, and those who are looking down cannot look up.”

When I am self focused, Lord God refocus me! Day after day; I must decrease and Jesus must increase! Help is my plea. 🙏🏽

I'm really just a small dirty sheep that can't figure out the way on my own. Thank God for Jesus being the Good Shepherd and coming to find me to bring me back to His flock. I was lost but He found me.

Pride is not only the number one sin, it is also dangerous. Pride goeth before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall. Proverbs 16:18.

I have a grandson who was raised in church and to believe the gospel. When his grandmother, who loved him above the others, asked him to go to college, he did. It was a Baptist college and he went in as a believer and came out an atheist. I was talking to him the other day, and I told him, not to let his pride keep him from believing in God. It's not hard to spot. He really is full of pride since he graduated.

"He (the devil) is perfectly content to see you becoming chaste and brave and self-controlled, provided all the time he is setting up in you the dictatorship of pride". This was powerful for me. I used to stack up perceived virtues like trophies, glorifying myself in my own mind. I'm currently trying to transition from that mode of thinking to that of forgetting myself and pursuing virtue because it's what God has called us to. Lord, let my motivation be of submission and obedience, not pride and false humility!

There is a thought, a confession which is an anchor of humility. "Apart from Thee I can do nothing." Apart from Jesus, we are nothing in terms of faith or religion. He is the vine which nourishes the branch and brings forth the fruit from it: love, joy, peace, patience, goodness and so on. It is the grace of God, his work in my heart which enables my anchor to hold. Gracious Father in Heaven, in the kindness of your gentle Spirit, grant me grace to be reminded that apart from you and your Son, I can do nothing pertaining to love and Godliness.
