The story of the Unipower GT

The Unipower GT could have been a world beater. It should have been a world beater as it was the sports car that had it all - pace, looks, quality and relative affordability.
But poor management led to the project foundering after just 71 cars had been built. This is the story of how it came about - and how the Unipower GT met its demise.

As a student in 1972-73 I lusted mightily after the Unipower GT. Some came up for sale in the “Exchange & Mart” but never, ever, in my price range. Driving my 1963 Mini (bog standard) from my studies in Glasgow to Inverness, the Isle of Lewis and my summer job at Heathrow Airport my eyes were always watching in hope of catching a glimpse of this rare gem. I remain out of luck to this day, not least of all, having lived in Canada since 1974. Thanks for a great video that once again has me dreaming!

I had Chassis UWF 1005/69 (UK Reg ROR 99G) for many years until 2001. Currently undergoing a refurb from another owner

One of my top desirables back in the day, I've only ever seen two in the flesh. I still have my factory brochure shown at 3:30. Great video thank you!

Great video. I saw this very car and its friendly owner a couple of years ago, at a classics meet-up near Waterloo in London. It made my Triumph Spitfire look big, that's how small these things are! Notice the rear hatch catches are borrowed from the Spitfire / Herald range.

Only ever seen one of these before at a show I was filming for the channel or in books. Fascinating little car.

Great video guys. It is about time this superb motor car got more recognition. How about doing a video on the Ogle SX1000 next? Or Ginetta 15 or Clan Crusader?

This is the car I always wanted since the first time I saw one. Unfortunately they are as rare as hen's teeth. I haven't seen one in decades, not even in a museum. This car is far superior to the Fiat X1/9 (which I did own) and could have been a tremendous success. Maybe they could have eventually developed a version with a targa top.

Very nice, though not as good looking as a GTM Coupe.

With different management I don’t think this car would have been anymore successful than it had been, the British motor industry was in decline by the late 60’s and volume orders were unrealistic. Having said that it wasn’t a bad looking car.

Was this car r e a l l y the inspiration for the X1/9? I have an X, and have read and watched a lot on their history but this is the first time I’ve heard your position being proposed. I’m definitely not saying that you’re wrong. However, I remain healthily sceptical.

Looks like a cross between a Mini Marcos and a Lotus Europa.

I hate to ask what is this slow pan up to look at the sky, and slow pan down to look at earthworms for - just to show it is dry in England once and awhile?🦝☺😄
