I really like the idea of Anakin losing because of his ego though. As far as character development the high ground ending works.

both endings use a technically forbidden (by the jedi order) technique by Obi wan, which means it was a deliberate choice to have Obi wan be overwhelmed by Anakin, and pushing him to emotion

Yeah that admittedly does sound much better. IIRC didn't Anakin physicially choke Obi Wan earlier in the fight? I could see Lucas finding that a bit redundant even if the second would use the force instead.

So in normal ending. Obi-Wan uses a forbidden technique called Mou-Kei which is severing multiple limbs at once and then in the alternate ending. Instead of Mou-Kei, he does a different forbidden technique (forgot the name) where you turn off your lightsaber mid duel then turn it back on.

Obi Wan was overpowered until the ending. Him saying he has the high ground was both literal based on where he stood and symbolic for having the moral high ground. He knew Anakin's rage and ego would blind him and that's why he lost.
