To divide 3 by 1/2 we can either multiply the first fraction by its reciprocal OR we could find a common denominator for both fractions. In this video we'll use the reciprocal method. Both methods produce the same answer in fraction form.

First we change 3 ÷ 1/2

to

3 times 2/1 (3 x 2/1)

This gives us 6/1 which is equal to 6.

So 3 ÷ 1/2 = 6.

Note that if you multiplied 6 times 1/2 you would end with 3.

Multiplying a fraction by its reciprocal is often easier for more complicated fractions where finding a common denominator is more challenging.

So if I divide a pizza by 1 half, I get 2 whole pizzas?
