I think we also need to consider maintaining existing applications, which kinda sucks and the codebase you didn't create without good documentation and proper architecture would be a big mess.

In terms of making real-world projects, I agree because when you're applying for a job, you can share these experiences to them and convince how impactful your value would be to their organization. Plus, when you get hired, it will make it more easier for you to adapt.

If you can't think a project, find real-world problems, and provide a solution.

It took some years and it is COMPLETELY obvious, and yet it finally hit me.

If I can’t build something awesome, why would someone want to hire me? Many people can do the cool project idea, but many also just dont start or finish it.

now it is your turn to hire someone for an important job. Fixing the roof of your house for example. You want it done on the first try…you want PROOF that they can do it, not just them saying that they can do it. Previous work and referrals, etc..

Hence our personal projects / portfolios to GIVE PROOF them that we CAN do it and that we know what it takes to see it through.

When it comes to UI architecture, I realized the best way to have both maintainability AND scalability is to make services that update some store of data (like redux reducers) and have the parent pass the object of services that the subtree of components will use.

This way you can have completely re-usable components that also update the store in a known way that is easy to keep in your head.

The concept is similar to Microservices, but can be applied to UI Architecture as well.

Coding ability has less to do with your ability to code, and more to do with knowing which designs are easier to code.

would you say that building something fun to me doesn't make me stand out? I mean I don't have any idea to build the next unicorn start-up. as a fresh grad I just build stuff that I find interesting most of the time

This is really well said. Diff between novice to advanced for sure!

Coding projects and so on only matters in good companies, whereas in bad companies like the FAANG the only thing that matters is how much ass-kissing you are able to do and how much useless, purely theoretical knowledge you have i.e. algorithms and data structures.

If you can do this just start your own company and sell your products
