Why is google always killing it's best features/hardware... Such a bummer. I have one myself and thought about buying another one. They sell milions of chromecasts all over the world for cheap. Old TVs are now capable of YouTube streaming (which means more ad time for google). It's a win win situation...

I really hate this throw-away era we are in with tech. It makes me second guess every purchase I make now. I don't want to be in an endless game of cat and mouse buying something just to replace it 2-3 years later or fall in love with a product and want more around my house just to find that it's no longer available anywhere or no longer supported by the manufacturer.

Their argument holds as much water as a sieve. The people buying their less expensive dongle are the people who are not paying for a high-end TV. if you are only spending one or two hundred on your TV, then the built-in "smart" is usually dog shit.

Google really handing Amazon a win here.... No one wants to spend 100 bucks on a Streamer when you can get a high hand fire tv for 60 bucks.

the chromecast and chromecast audio was one of google's best inventions. like at any time if you see a cast logo you could just press a button and select your TV and it's just UP there. like not even most TVs today can even claim that.

its unconscionable that the cast protocol isn’t open-source. This wouldn’t be a problem at all if I could just build my own with a Raspberry Pi

It should be mandated that "Smart TVs" are just normal dumb TVs with a streaming stick plugged in. just put an HDMI and a USB port underneath a door underneath the TV or something. that way in 10 years when the smarts go dumb you're not stuck with a boat anchor having to navigate a Smart TV without internet.

Devices like these are the reason I stopped buying smart tvs because I can easily control my experience and also it’s cheaper. Sad to see those one go but I don’t really mind because I’ve been using a self built tv box.

The problem with the Streamer is that I have to mount it somewhere for my wall mounted TVs. I can't just hang it off the HDMI port. I just hope that Google will still support my Chromecasts for many years and they don't break.

Bummer. They're kinda cool for turning old HDTVs into smart TVs. Exactly what I've done, out one of my old Samsung TVs which still looks great into my bedroom with a Chromecast plugged in, absolutely love it. Main living room has a much nicer TV

Still reach for my Chromecast with Google TV 4K remote everyday when I get home, and with eARC everything just goes on... Hope they give it the 5 - 7 year support treatment. I mean the Pixel 6 Pro got the buff....

Biggest flaw of Google is that ditch...everything. Hell years ago I bought couple movies from Google and was it third movie or something like that it hit me "wtf am I doing? It's Google, this service might be gone tomorrow". I don't have any trust for Google devices. Like Chromecast Audio. Great little device and I was ready to buy few more to get full home audio in virtually every room experience, but no. Axed. Now Chromecast itself???

The original chrome-cast was affordable and it worked well. Google manged to ruin it with price hikes without barely adding anything compared to what you'd get on a Nvidia shield, like AI up-scaling etc.

It's frustrating that the new Google TV Streamer's audio sync issues still exist, despite 2 updates that were supposed to fix it (they didn't), and very important TV apps like BBC iPlayer have still not come out on it. Admittedly that second issue is down to the BBC, but I wouldn't be surprised if they're holding off BECAUSE of the audio issues, and frankly Google should be working with arguably the biggest TV broadcaster in the UK, possibly even Europe, in order to get it's app up and running

I am disappointed. The Chromecast actually works! Since it is travel-size, I travel with it and hook it up to TVs in hotels. I even plug it to my computer monitor. As you mentioned, "out of sight and out of mind, " but it truly works!

I've used them for many years now, even adding additional memory with a hub. Great devices at a great price. You're correct about the shortcomings of the built-in functionality in TVs. Sorry to see it go

This is a terrible idea unless they come out with a cheaper streamer option.
