Light Phone 3 Review || The Gold Standard!

The Light Phone 3 is one of the most anticipated intentional phones coming to the market. After a 1 week review, I can tell you that Light does not disappoint. In this review, I will go over most of the positive aspects with a few improvements that can be made. However, I can already tell you that this is the phone to get and keep for a long time.

Really happy that you are pushing for RCS Jose. As a light phone 2 user, who loves everything dumbphone, I cannot wrap my head around the lack of RCS and hate seeing others gaslight that RCS isn't important

I will never understand the hate or dumbphone gatekeeping for semi-dumbphones like this. I don't want to go back to 2002 with my phone. I like having a camera on me at all times, and it's not a detriment to my mental health or productivity to have it.. nor is having my music for my drive to work. This is just the perfect balance for me. No social media, no youtube, just a phone that I can rely on to do things I need it to do and nothing I don't.

I think grouping RCS with Beeper and WhatsApp minimizes the importance of RCS. It is a messaging standard, not just an app like the others. Implementing RCS would truly make this minimalist phone compatible with other phones on the market and make the burden of using this less great.

The better camera is a good selling point.

The light phone looks like what we were promised the future of phones would look like. Not this glowing device that steals our attention and data but something designed for calling and texting with some applications for light entertainment.

In my opinion it's dangerous to ship a product that does not support secure communication. Forget Signal or Whatsapp. RCS should be a bare minimum for texting, this is putting the security and privacy of users at risk. If its not a deal breaker, it should at least prevent this device from receiving the "gold standard" stamp. I understand wanting to be minimal. But minimalism shouldnt come at the cost of data security/safety.

Wikipedia: Rich Communication Services (RCS) is a communication protocol standard for instant messaging, primarily for mobile phones, developed and defined by the GSM Association (GSMA). It aims to be a replacement of SMS and MMS on cellular networks with more modern features including high resolution image and video support, typing indicators, file sharing, and improved group chat functionality.

Most people probably dont know what RCS is so they don't know that they want it. Most people just think of SMS as text messaging. RCS would be a good feature Light can roll out in the future because its already the industry standard to replace SMS.

Regarding Signal, "we've always been interested in a Signal collaboration, but to date our conversations with them have lead us to believe it would be quite the undertaking for our small team to maintain ongoing. We are keeping those conversations alive and feel it would be great to have an official Signal client supported on LightOS as an option for users. As someone who has been using a Punkt MP02 full-time for more than a year now, this is going to be such a nice upgrade. Looking forward to my preorder coming in.

That’s a great point about the price. A lot of reviewers are clowning on the price which is entirely fair. Especially at the $800 post pre-order price it’s pretty crazy. But it’s a small company, with a small amount of overall units serving a very specific audience. Tech YouTubers who are addicted to their phones serving audiences who are also addicted are just gonna see this as a silly little device. But the value of this only really hits home when you want to see it. I think for me, it just needs Uber/Lyft & Spotify and I’d jump in full force with it. I honestly think sometimes these phones go a touch overboard. Removing YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, TikTok, all social media etc. and not even having the ability to download them. While leaving 3rd party messaging apps, email, 3rd party music apps, and rideshare apps intact would do what they’re seeking without completely hindering a large audience from being able to even consider it. Because if you have to carry an iPhone anyways for work emails for example (even if it has no cellular and you strictly hotspot it then shut it off) you completely defeat the purpose of the Light phone to begin with.

As a LPII user, my two biggest changes I would make, is I would like to have a camera, and I would like a better directions tool. Light Phone III sounds like my perfect upgrade. Hopefully I will have it next week🤞🏻

SMS is not a free thing all over the world. A light phone with call and SMS over the internet would have been a good thing.

Nice review Jose - the phone looks great. If they don’t have this on the device already, a nice improvement for the camera app would be to be able to set your own custom camera look for your images. Apple offers this and you can add warmth or contrast or whatever just to get a better result straight out of camera, and that custom look is applied every time you use the camera. Hopefully the guys at Light could implement that if they’re not already planning to do so!
