Things I ALWAYS do to improve my Japanese curry: 1) buy the Java (best imo) or Vermont curry brands, they taste more rich and flavourful than the standard golden curry, 2) caramelize the onions, and add even more onions at the potato + carrot stage so you can see bits of onion in the final dish, 3) add grated apple and cook it down with the other veggies, 4) use good quality beef or chicken stock if you have it, 5) finish with a few knobs of butter, 1 tbsp each of ketchup, soy sauce, and Worcestershire sauce (or even better - Japanese Bulldog/tonkatsu sauce) and adjust these to taste. Some people even like to add chocolate or coffee to deepen the flavour! These additions will truly make your curry taste and look like the restaurant quality curries you find in Japan!

Instantly bought the golden curry blocks and tried this yesterday, mixing veggies in my fridge, adding a fish filet made in the oven and of course, rice. It was delicious and it will definitely be added to the family menu! 🙏🏻

I grew up eating Japanese curry and it is truly a national icon. There is so much culture around curry in Japan.
It's a staple dish when you go out camping, as it's a simple dish that everyone can help make. And because it's so dead simple, pretty much everyone has their own version, with different regions and prefectures adding their own local vegetables to make a version unique to their area. And because it's such a reliable dish that's frankly difficult to mess up and fairly healthy, it's one of the main dishes served at schools and during disaster relief.

Actually, my family from Hong Kong used to make Japanese curry rice using ACTUAL CHOCOLATE instead of that chunk. And it tasted awesome!

I will try this curry, it looks amazing! I would love for you to try the Mexican national dish, mole poblano, but damn, good mole paste is hard to find overseas and making it from scratch is... well... it's a complicated dish lol

what a generous rating!! Makes me even more proud to be Japanese haha
My dad gave me a tip when making curry, to mix the different flavors of curry (the spicy one and sweet one), and I can confirm that it tastes better somehow 😂

i have japanese and peruvian roots, and i’m very proud to say that both cultures have amazing food. you should do a peruvian dish next, maybe ceviche or lomo saltado, there are plenty of options really :)

Every Japanese has a word or two about how to make curry rice. Of course it is all about the meat and the brand, but each person has his or her own secret condiments. For example, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, fruit, honey, and some even add coffee or chocolate. Anyway, I am very glad you enjoy Japanese curry rice!

Keep up good work!

I have this exact pot at 1:08 that’s also used for the curry. Mines red, that’s beriberi cool.

Since I've made curry for Christmas I eat it every day now (made it again after it was over). I'm obsessed. The pre made pack is too expensive here, so I just make the roux myself (takes 5 minutes), like my grandma taught me. Since then I've tried again, thickening with corn starch. It worked great, but I still prefer the result with the roux.

I love curries, but for me, Japanese brown curry is one of the most satisfying meals.

I love Japanese curry rice, I make mine with ground beef but otherwise it's pretty similar to how you do it. I have also put mushrooms and beets in with much success and I've had it at restaurants that had peas in it and it was good. I also like to layer the veggies in the pot in order of what needs the most cooking so mushrooms/onions, carrots, potatoes and then pre cooked beef on top and I also do the entire veggie cook/simmer with the curry mix already in instead of adding it at the end so that everything is nicely infused with curry goodness.

You should totally try Portuguese food. We have a lot of good stuff! We have *Cozido à Portuguesa* (Portuguese stew), *sardinhas assadas* (grilled sardines), *Bacalhau à Brás* (cod with potato and beaten eggs, all mixed) and many others.
