I'm currently using Galaxy S6 Edge+. It's 9 years old, but still doing pretty well. It has 1440p AMOLED display and 16 MP camera which is definitely better than any 50 MP camera on modern budget phones.

Or you can just buy Flagship phones 1 or 2 years after release.
They are generally sold for about half the price and you still get a favorable amount of software updates

What you forgot to mention is that internationally prices for phones dont really decline as much as in north america, which makes a brand new midranger more affordable.

Enthusiasts will disagree but a new midrange for sure, most of the “premium” features of the old flagships will have been refined and transferred over to the midrange, and the software improvements will make up for a lesser camera setup, in addition you get the warranty and no peace of mind issues, and everything will just function better

a tip for someone who always buys old flagship : befriend someone who works in official brand selling center. they always got 30-70% discount, some brands even give their phone for free for workers if they already works there for years, and most people who works there change their phone often

2/3 years old flagships are fine, but when I hear old phone I think about something like Samsung S6 or IPhone 7

Well there was this huge upgrade with the battery. Usually we were talking 4000mAh (brand new battery) but with newer technology were talking 6000-7000 mAh with basically the same price. Thats the advantage that you get with newer phones. Technology improves every time and (surprise surprise) even nowadays which is why new is mostly better

It depends on the user. If they want it mainly for games, some midrange phone outmatched old flagship in performance, but if your main focus is camera, I think they need to go for older flagships since it has better or one of the best camera on their time.
