Why Japan SLAUGHTERS Cats and Dogs More Than Any Other Country

*The content is based on personal studies and experience
There is no intention of denying other theories and cultural aspects

Through anime/manga, you might have seen that Japanese people love having rhinoceros/stag beetles as pets, but since when and why do we have such a culture?

Owning these beetles as pets became popular from the 1960s, and these are some of the reasons why.

1. The high economic growth period led to a pet boom
2. Urbanization increased the desire to be in contact with nature
3. They are cool because they resemble the monsters that appear in the Sentai and Kamen Rider series
4. Easy to raise and breed as pets

By the way, in Japan, the culture of enjoying the sound of crickets has existed for more than 1,000 years, and there were even craftsmen who raised and sold crickets in the Edo period (1603~1868). With this historical background, it is said that the culture of keeping rhinoceros beetles and stag beetles may have easily spread.

I got so excited when you mentioned Kamen Rider. It's my favourite show!

Another thing to add: Collecting beetles was some sort of hobby that inspired Pokémon, also, beetles being agressive and territorial, they immediately fight each other (by suplexing) so pitting them in a fight is very easy, and gives you bragging rights because your beetle suplexed the other first.
Also, i heard the Heracles Beetles are very popular over there despite not being native from there, but from here in Latin America. They are objectively the coolest bugs, since they're stronger than any animal in nature (How many other animals can lift 100x their own weight? Not many)

Seeing those beetles just makes me think of Animal Crossing New Leaf, lots of nights selling beetles.

I always knew it was just the compact size and general coolness of the beetles that made them popular. And they ARE cool.

Why do Japanese prefer rhinoceros beetles over stag beetles?

This is more proof that the fear of bugs is learned, and in reality there’s usually nothing to be scared of. Beetles make great pets and once you get over your initial feelings, they’re very cute and super cool (:

Dangit, I thought you meant the Beatles. Was hoping for some Ringo Starr puns ;_;
But that is super neat that bugs are popular as pets in Japan. Makes me feel less weird for having a pet tarantula c:
