Greyson Nekrutman is a teen drumming phenom who has so much passion and energy, he’s impossible to ignore. He admires the great drumming legends and he’s covered a ton of classic jazz and big band tunes over the past few years.

“That’s cool and all, but can you play ‘Caravan’?”

The movie Whiplash came out in 2014, and it reminded the rest of the world how awesome drumming is. It featured the song “Caravan” (Juan Tizol/Duke Ellington), which became a recurring piece for the protagonist.

Of course, whenever a song enters pop culture, people start requesting that song. And as a drummer – especially as a jazz drummer – you bet Greyson has been asked to play it. It’s like asking a metal guitarist to shred the solo from Dragonforce’s “Through The Fire And Flames“.

In the video above, Greyson nails the song and goes into an extended drum solo with killer technique and dynamics, blazing fast hands, and confidence.

one of the coolest things to me about this solo is that at 4:42 he accidentally clicks his sticks together. You can see him kind of stop and think about it for a moment and then he decides to work the stick clicks into the solo. That kind of fast thinking can't be taught!

Insane! The same guy that is playing this jazz masterpiece is now touring with Sepultura (Metal). Insane this versatility.

Incredible performance. The difference between this Caravan and the movie is that Greyson is playing with passion and freedom of expression. Neiman was playing with blind determination and fury.

I saw Buddy Rich live 3 times, Art Blakey, Dave Weckl multiple times....Am a former drummer...needless to say, I really love what Greyson is doing. He's bringing back a lost art form that has and more. Hats off to you Greyson! Love this music!

The fact that Greyson is only 19 years old blows my mind, imagine how good he’s gonna be when he’s much older if he’s already this incredible. A true legend.

I've been a drummer for 55 years, and Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa always rolled off my tongue when talking about the greatest. There's a new kid in town, and he's number one. Greyson! God has gifted you, kid. Be safe in your travels so we can enjoy you for years to come. I wish people realized how many hours if dedicated practice and suffering it took to gain your talent. Jaw

Finally he's getting his deserved recognition. Been following him for about a year on insta now and just waited for some big drum channel to cover this amazing talent.

Greyson is proficient in so many styles of music, not even just jazz. Thank you Drumeo for showcasing one of the greatest drummers of the current generation.

Ok so it's an objective fact that Greyson is literally an unstoppable force, but can we also appreciate the drum mix? Not sure who else is behind the sound team besides Victor, but man, well done. You guys really made this a premium experience.

Dude is an absolute prodigy.

But I think we also need to discuss his legendary sock choice.

What makes this *so* much more impressive that the covers I've seen before from the whiplash version is that Nekrutman literally played this in his own style, showing that playing preexisting drumbeats isn't all he can do.

the way they mic'd recorded and mixed this so perfectly as if we're all sitting in a tiny basement jazz club

Seriously: no one commented "Not quite my tempo"?
(Outstanding drumming, by the way)

Just the simple fact he didn’t drop his sticks with the amount of sweat pouring off of him is amazing! This kid is going places

I asked Greyson to play this for me live at his clinic. Being the legend he is, he didn't say no and I can happily brag that I got to witness this masterpiece in person
