The great hammer Coach Stuart Togher gave me this drill at Jump Start clinic in Edmonton a number of years back and I have used it ever since with my throwers. I find that it really helps them with the rhythm of the turns and connection with the ball and the right foot step/catch of the ball. In this version, Jordana Badley-Costello (55m thrower) is also using the "turning board" to emphasis the connection of the system between herself and the ball. The turning board is simply a 2x4 with screws in the middle to stop the hammer handle from slipping. The athlete holds each end of the board with the emphasis on the right hand pushing. We use Turning Board at various lengths from 3ft down to a foot, down to the where the athlete eventually just holds the handle. Jordana is doing 4 steps continuously as she turns down the pad with the 4th step down as the ball hits 180. We actually use the full turns with the Turning Board in a release.
