I bought my 1D X in 2014 at full price and it was my dream camera (my version of a Ferrari for camera). I used it for a good 6 months and then life changed and my hobby took a backseat, my 1D X has only had about 15K actuations. This camera’s image quality even at 11 year old still impresses me every time I get to use it.

I have the 5d4 and the 1dx. The 1dx has a better sensor. Around 20mp is the sweet spot on full frame for high iso performance & image quality. Bigger pixels make it easier to get sharper photos at lower shutter speeds.
With the new AI editing software available now, you can effectively push this camera's images to 36mp if needed. I've printed 30x40 with 8mp images from a 20D. If 18mp isn't enough you're too far away or doing something wrong.

My answer to the question: When does gear expire? is easy. Gear Expires as soon as it is broken and can't be repaired anymore. This is because the gear I use is in parts older than I am with my Nikon af 300mm f4 produced from 1987-2000 still renders great images, and my used d3 from 2007 still keeps up with my expectations as an enthusiast.

There's just something about the quality of the images from this camera that can't be beaten, it's a modern classic. For me it's a special camera for special jobs.

It's good that technology progresses and its good that those who can afford to keep pace with it, keep buying these new products. It provides the second hand camera market where us less affluent people can buy the stuff when it becomes affordable. When our 'old friends' cease to work, we need replacements from somewhere! I'm an 80D, 7DII, 5DIV owner, all second hand, all do a great job and I love em to bits, mind you, I do use them with EF L glass!

Nothing ever really becomes obsolete, even after it breaks you can still use parts from other broken cameras to revitalise them, as I have with many cameras over the years. I'm still buying professional Canon film cameras from the 80s and 90s which are just as exquisite as the day they were manufactured. As for the 1DX, which I own, not only is it still in mint condition, it still takes perfectly decent photographs at 18 megapixels, which is the perfect size for anything you would ever want to print up to billboard size. Any sensor larger than that is compromised by noise due to the size of the area which light can fall on the individual pixel, meaning more in-camera noise reduction and more smeary images. :-)

Technology with all the bells and whistles wont make you a better photographer. I’ve shot next to folks using the so called latest and greatest gear, and their images were horrible.

Great video presentation. Half way through your video I searched and found a Canon 1DX with 38, 000 shutter actuations and bought it. Thank you!!

still happy with mine! for wildlife image Quality is of the chart, especially in the early morning when the light is low, and ISO's are high.

Just made $600 in two photo shoots with a 1Dx and it worked very well. As someone who also used a pair of 1Dx III's and mirrorless the 1Dx is definitely not a dinosaur, it has most of the same functionality of the more modern iterations. While I think they are massive upgrades to the 1Dx, the 1Dx is still an extremely capable body and gets the job done very well. At the price point I think it is one of the best values for a pro body you can get.

1DX still a great camera. I was using 1D mark3 back 2012, 1DX for me was a dream camera

Many of my coleagues still use Canon 1dx. If professional photojournalists who shoot protests and sports use it, it means that this camera is quite capable :)

I still use my Canon AE-1P, it’s a 35 yo camera. Being obsolete is in the mind of the user.

I hate idiotic questions such as "is this camera obsolete?" 35mm cameras from 30-50 years ago are still be used today are are not obsolete, lol. Only dumb millennials and Gen-Zers think gear goes absolute just because camera companies release new models every two years.

There's no such thing as an obsolete camera. Even 35mm is not obsolete. Most people, including photographers, cannot tell the difference in an image taken with a 16mp camera vs a 36mp camera. Higher mp is good for better crops.

One reason I would consider the 1DX is that it has duel CF slots, rather than one CF and one SD.

There’s something magical about how this camera rendered an image.

Remember those beautiful photos you are seeing as a child? That’s how it is.
