Q. Find the distance between the parallel planes 10x+2y−2z=5 and 5x+y−z=1.

Steps:

1. Show that the planes are, in fact, parallel
i. Are they the same?
ii. Is one a scalar factor of the other? – components are proportional
2. Choose any point on one plane by setting two of the three coordinates equal to zero and solving for the third.

3. Substitute this point into the formula along with the components of the normal vector into the a, b, and c, where d is the equations constant.
