My dad was a pharmacist and he made vanilla extract every Christmas for his customers. Such a nice memory.

When vanilla sky rocketed I asked my son for some vanilla for Christmas and he said I'm not getting you vanilla! He didn't realize how truly expensive it had become....This year I'll ask for all ingredients to make my own. Thanks Paula🤗🤗🤗🤗

I have been furloughed from work since April and some days have been really hard and stressful wondering if I will be asked to return to work and when. I have to tell you Paula, your videos have been an absolute ray of sunshine to watch every single day in this time of uncertainty. Ive had a gallon of vanilla going forever. Just keep adding beans and more vodka to the large bottle as I take out and fill my pint. Yummm

When I lived overseas I made my own vanilla. When I retire the vanilla pods from the liquid vanilla, I put them into a container of sugar to make my own vanilla sugar.

Homemade Vanilla extract is the best! I have a large jar my daughter made for me last April and she used Vodka. I waited almost 9 months before using. Tastes and smells amazing!

I have made my own vanilla for a few years now and will NEVER go back to non homemade again! You are so right Paula, it is like liquid gold. For those of you that have not made this before (I have always used vodka also) your vanilla, when ready, will not be as "dark" as store bought, but don't worry. I let mine sit about 3 months and shake the jar about every two or three days. At the end of three months, open it and smell to see if it has a strong vanilla smell...then it's ready. The longer it sits the darker it will become, but I can tell you this, you will be using homemade from here on out. It is the absolute best! :)

You can do this without splitting the beans and get the same result.. and you will get longer life out of the beans. 😉

I just decided the same thing last week! I made some with Tito's and some with Jack Daniel's. I have 4 containers 2 with Madagascar beans and 2 with organic beans from Indonesia. I'm also waiting till Christmas and using some for gifts. I split mine but didn't scrap the stuff out and some I cut in half to fit in smaller jars.

I paint the top of a pineapple upside down cake (the pineapple side after cooking) with vanilla extract. Made it in a black iron skillet. Took it to a veterans luncheon my Girl Scout troop sponsored and served by my girls. It was soo good. Next year I'll have to make a lot more cakes maybe with peach and pears.
