Saul “Canelo” Alvarez retained his WBC 154-pound title with a 5th-round TKO over game-as-hell Josesito Lopez. Alvarez, 41-0-1 (30 KOs) was relentless. Lopez, 31-5 (18 KOs), was battered both upstairs and downstairs and though bloodied and battered, it was the body-punching of Alvarez that took Lopez out of this fight. It was a one-sided bout, but an entertaining one nonetheless.
There’s nothing unusual about a rabid Vegas fight throng, but a Canelo fight on Mexican Independence Day has created a little extra crackle, with the MGM crowd very lit up and ready for action. Canelo really puts the fannies in the seats. The referee, in his final fight as the third man in the ring, was Joe Cortez.
Rd 1: Canelo and a softer-looking Lopez studied each other in the middle of the ring. A right landed by Canelo. Lopez peeled off a combination before moving away. Big right by Canelo. Right away, his punches resonate differently–more solid and thudding. Canelo opened up a combo up and down, finishing with a nice hook downstairs. Lopez fires back. Good opening round.
Rd 2: Canelo flashing a nice jab. Lopez pins Canelo on the ropes and unleashes in an exciting moment. Canelo redoubles his effort and strafes Lopez’ body with big shots. 6-punch combo by Alvarez. Nice hook by Lopez. Good action. Canelo lands a right and avoids the Lopez attack. Canelo showing poise and defense in avoiding the rapid Lopez volleys. Huge left to the body of Lopez! Lopez goes down! He rises at 9 and returns to his corner as the bell rings. He is now bleeding from his nose and mouth.
Rd 3: Lopez tries to move to open the 3rd, with Canelo patiently working behind the jab. Another body shot puts Lopez down. He rises at 8. Canelo works him over in the corner. A double-dogged Lopez fires back, but alas–he’s undersized and underpowered. Another Alvarez fusillade at the 30-second mark. Lopez fires back passionately. No problem for Canelo.
Rd 4: A sharp, accurate, and hard-hitting Canelo bangs Lopez around some more and stiffens Lopez with a big straight right. Lopez spins out, but is bloody and struggling to find a grip on his dilemma. Cortez calls a low blow and gives Lopez a brief reprieve. Lopez says he’s ready. Lopez opens up with a furious combo. Canelo comes forward and another big combination drops Lopez in the corner just at the bell. He gets up.
Rd. 5: Canelo fired booming lefts to the body of Lopez, who is as game as they come. Lopez is getting battered, but firing back with gusto and even appeared to sting Canelo with a big right. Canelo is teeing off, especially effective to the body. Lopez is trying just so hard, it’s hard to not root for the kid. After raking Canelo with some shots and a big left uppercut. Canelo then acted suddenly. He worked him over with some potent shots. An uppercut shook him and a right hand that wobbled Lopez brought in Joe Cortez for a well-timed stop. The time was 2:55. A nice performance for Canelo, whose star continues to rise. For Lopez, it was a rough outing, but not one that should be held against him, considering the size differential.
