In this week's Encountering the Word video, Jeff Cavins discusses how to cut out the things we do, the places we go, and the things we watch that cause us to sin, as he reflects on the Gospel reading for the Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The readings are:

First Reading: Wisdom 2:12, 17-20
Responsorial Psalm: 54:3-4, 5, 6 and 8
Second Reading: James 3:16—4:3
Alleluia: Cf. 2 Thes 2:14
Gospel: Mark 9:30-37

Thank you for this great explanation, Jeff.
Strange that the topic of "who is the greatest" exists in the work place, family, friends and seems to occupy people's minds more than anything else. Let us occupy our minds with Jesus.

My Parish Priest reading the Gospel today (Sunday), changed the word ‘first’ to ‘free’. I can’t tell if it was a slip of the tongue 😛 but it gave a different slant to the issue of what the disciples were arguing over. 😂

This time, I got a little different take on this gospel from the usual. Jesus tells the apostles he will be killed. They don't understand or question. Instead, they are arguing who's the greatest-- in other words, who will be "king" or the "leader" or "who will take over" when Jesus gets killed! ...What!??? 😢 I felt so sad for Jesus. No compassion for Our Lord.
