AQA GCSE PE: The Functions Of The Skeleton | The Skeletal System | How To Pass GCSE PE | AQA Paper 1

This video seeks to briefly outline 6 functions of the skeleton. Each of these have a significant role and it is essential that YOU understand these in preparation for the AQA GCSE PE (9-1) paper 1 examination.

In addition to this, functions should be applied to performance in physical activity, for example: highlighting the importance of bones offering protection during a game of rugby when on the receiving end of a strong tackle.

You also need to know the following bones and there locations within the body:
• head/neck - cranium and vertebrae
• shoulder - scapula and humerus
• chest - ribs and sternum
• elbow - humerus, radius and ulna
• hip - pelvis and femur
• knee - patella, femur and tibia
• ankle – tibia, fibula and talus

I have attached the AQA specification below where you can read about this.

Key terms: skeletal system, function, support, structural shape, ligament, protection - flat bones (cranium, ribs), movement - muscle (bicep), tendon, bone (radius), blood cell production - red and white blood cells, mineral storage - minerals (phosphorus, calcium).
