Why Formula 1 Killed DRS

DRS IS GONE! Formula 1 and the FIA recently announced that from 2026 onwards, DRS will no longer be used as a tool drivers can use for overtaking. Since it's introduction in 2011, the Drag Reduction System was always a controversial piece of equipment that many believed didn't solve the issue of overtaking, but instead created a problem where overtaking was now too easy and the art of the organic battle had been taken away from from the sport. So how does this effect F1? Why was DRS removed? And what is the NEW system drivers will have to assist with overtaking? Let's talk about it.

Heres a fact
Jenson was the first ever Formula 1 driver to press the DRS Button

It isn't killed, more like reincarnated.

Most races would be Monaco without DRS

I personally think that the 2026 Active Aero could work if its regulated by the FIA so that some team don't develop it like crazy like with what happened with DRS

With the cars nowadays, without DRS there will be no passes at all, it will be like before just a parade of expensive cars with no passes

I don't see how F1 can ever inherently make overtaking easier without assistance. The current era is faster than ever because every team is fighting to develop more downforce who's default side effect is turbulent air. If they want less turbulent backwash, then they need to regulate downforce which will overall slow down the car. Can't have both.

they need drs in 2026 considering the cars will have as much hp as a nascar nextgen car

I think the cars should have less grip. When it rains the racing is usually awesome for spectators

DRS killed great and creative overtakes in F1 and just made slam dunk passes on straights

DRS is lame as FK, because its predictable.
We know when DRS is allowed which is fine, but we also know WHERE they can use it. So of course the areas that allows for DRS are we gonna see the passes. Not only that the rules for how far behind the leading car form you determine when you can use it totally takes strategics advantages out of it.

They should have let the drivers pick when to use it.

F1 should introduce attack mode like it's in FE

The problem is the moveable aero has made the straights dangerous now according to the teams testing the new rules

It's still a drag reduction system, just unrestricted like it was early days

Isn't killed but yet reinforced. 2026 regulations set a second movable flap also for the front wing.

I stopped watching F1 when Schumi left. It also coincided with the bringing in lots of new measures such as DRS. I'm purist and for me I want to see the best vs the best in a more balanced arena. I appreciate strategy and different cars being created to compete but overtaking was a big part of the game. Holding off drivers, using skill to overtake all added to the excitement and tension. DRS for me made it easy to overtake but it's essentially been brought in for the fans to create entertainment. Im going to try and get back into the sport and see if I can fall in love with it again.

Is active aero not just going to be the new drag reduction?

I wish they bring back refueling IMO. Lot of older drivers are saying that new generation cars are easier to drive so it's not showing the driver's ability to push their limit instead it's just all tyre management.

Nobody seems to remember the seasons between the old tech cars of Senna’s area and the introduction of DRS. They were processions rather than races. Boring.

That is because of most tracks have no room to pass except on the straights. So are they going to improve the tracks, or make the cars one design. Without those removing DRS seems to be a requirement. I am less on the edge of my seat without it.

It also goes from a visual system to a hidden system.
