As a 27 who grew up with an abusive and neglectfully cruel apathetic father who did not want me and was not in my life as a child.

I honor God before and after him. Twice. Because I cant honor a wicked man. But i will honor God by being the man he wants me to be.

It's true - as a child, it's hard to accept the rules around you, but when you're older you'll understand why they were there and be grateful for them because it showed your parents loved you.
I had, what I thought were "strict" parents, but now that I'm a parent, I really understand what they were trying to do. And I honour them now by thanking them and spending as much time as I can with them. ❤

I was actually going to say: One day you will be able to do whatever you want, but by then you actually don't want to do that anymore.
It can go both ways. Don't deprive your child of happiness. There is the golden middle way you have to find.

Not all parents are worthy of being honored. Victims of bad parenting themselves, they perpetuate a deepening spiral of neglect/abuse/pain. It takes an enormous amount of effort and self awareness to reinvent that legacy.

It's best to explain Why those rules are in place. And say it with love but firmly. Do it at an early age and you will not have arguments because they know you won't change your mind(consistency). Tell them as they get older, as they become more responsible, that the rules will change. Give them opportunities for "freedom." All at appropriate ages.

Kinda hard to do that when they abused you on every level of boundary that’s not supposed to be crossed as a normal human being. So some context to this should be applied.

It actually translates to honor your parents so you may live longer.
Back in those days, honoring your parents meant that your kids would go on to honor you, and you and your family would survive

It's not about earning the right. It's about developing the character, virtue, and skills necessary to make morally and practically correct decisions which will amount to a "good" life. That's why at some point you transition from "require" to "inspire" as a parent... and then, the child becomes your practical equal in adulthood.

I agree to a certain point at some point you grow up and it isn't about eating broccoli. If your parents remain closed minded, judgemental, and hypocritical, with a firm belief that their demeaning and abusive lifestyle and religion is the only acceptable life. Then I believe necessary to cut ties to keep from propagating bad habits and limiting beliefs that could be passed down for generations.

Some parents don't love you, some are alcoholics, drug addicts, abuse the child physically then the child learns that in school is a wonderful environment to be in while at home is chaos. You are speaking about a small amount of families who are well to do, the majority of families are living in a stressful difficult times. can you advise what to do about this big difference?

You completely missed the point that honoring your mother and father is a respect that you give your parents for life. It does not stop at 18!

Before the internet, parents just let their kids go outside and do what they want. And we turned out in my opinion more sane than the newer generation..

Her vibe and the language that she uses… „Eat your brokkoli and honor me“ sounds like a bad quote from the last century. This is the kind of household I was born into, rigid and devoid of unconditional love, no thanks.

When you are able to do whatever you want, you should do what is honorable no matter what kind of parents you had.

Do what you have to so later, you can do what you want to. Good life principle.
