Is your commute to work worth it? | FT Life

The FT’s Nathan Brooker finds out how six world cities rank by commuter ‘drag’ to see if the pain and gain of the journey are worth it. He looks at time, punctuality and cost.

As a working pianist, I commute all over. I commute by bus to get to work, and some of my commutes to work are short and some of them are pretty long, but I love each and every one of them. I get to relax and talk with the drivers and sometimes, I will just pass my commute to and from work answering emails and catching up with friends or if I am not doing that, I will talk with drivers. I find each and every commute is so different but special. What people don’t understand is that a commute is actually part of your work day. Most people when you talk about commuting they are complaining about sitting in traffic for hours or if you are riding the bus having to bee on the bus for ever!! Well, I love commuting and yes. Everyone loves to get home and get a good hot meal on after work but on a commute to work and from work I think is a time to learn and pass time doing something. If you can talk with other commuters or if you are driving in your car just enjoying the trip. Really a commute doesn’t have to bee a drag. Their are always things to see on your commutes to and from work. Well, and if you ride the bus you get an advantage that those of you driving don’t have. You can sleep or relax with your stress level down knowing that you don’t have to drive. You can actually take time to do what you want catching up on emails and or napping for a bit. Me personally I love on longer commutes like to look up songs about commuting. Even on my short commutes i look up songs that have to do with commuting. It really does pass the time and make it faster. So though sometimes commuting can bee stressful it does not have to bee that way. Take time to learn something or arch up on emails do that so wen you get to work you don’t have to worry about what is in the inbox. Take the teim to do that while commuting or if you are driving pass the time listening to a pod cast before you pull out of your driveway, , , make sure that you have it ready to go.
