How Does Darth Vader Breathe And Talk At The Same Time? 🤯

How does Darth Vader breathe and talk at the same time?

Cuz a couple scenes in the original trilogy has Vader’s iconic breathing noise going on while he’s talking!

Sure we humans breathe in and out when talking but his breathing patterns are not matching that at all!

And we could pin this on the sound effects team for being lazy and didn’t bother to separate the signature Vader-breathing from his voice.

But then we also have the actual Star Wars answer to this question.

See, after being brutally injured and suffering lung damage after his fight with Obi Wan

Vader needed a suit that would help him breathe cuz he couldn’t do it on his own anymore!

Think of Vader’s suit as an iron lung.

The suit literally breathe’s for him!

This is why sometimes when he talks, the suit is pumping air into his lungs at the same time which leads to us hearing both Vader speaking and breathing!

And in tesb, when Vader duels Luke, you can’t hear Vader breathing in some parts and that’s because Vader literally turned off his life support so he could get a surprise attack on Luke. That’s devotion.

George Lucas plans everything. Even the prequels were fully fleshed out before he started the script for A new Hope

Ok... People don't seem to understand the idea that the suit has no air tanks.
The respirator part of his helmet is sucking air in, cleaning it up and circulating it within his helmet for hsi destroyed lungs to breathe in at will.

The suit IS NOT breathing for him, it is simply preparing air for him and pressurising his suit.

I believe the suit also puts pharmaceuticals (bacta) into the air he breathes.. Can't recall if that was canon or head canon... Don't quote me on that bit.

But, no. What you hear is NOT the breathing, just his cycling system dumping old air and bringing in fresh air.
This is why he can turn it off at will. As long as there is enough air in his suit, he is good.

Also... "Barking dog" analogy.
When you hear a scary thing, scary things are coming and you should give up.
It's a well known psychological war tactic.

Dude this was answered, way before the prequels were ever made by George Lucas!

Lore reasons for sound design oversights are hilarious

I really like how Star Wars always has canon explanation of every plot hole exist tho. They're so creative and detailed.

I always thought of the breathing as 24/7 respirator, always pumping even while he talks

Sorry, that's not how that works. Air is either going into your lungs, out of them, or neither, never both at the same time. In order to talk, air must be going out of your lungs through your trachea (or into your lungs, but that sounds super weird). That holds with the iron lung as well; you may not be breathing yourself, per se, but the air is still entering and exiting your lungs via the same passageway: your trachea. So no, you can't speak while the iron lung is making you inhale or else it will sound super weird.

Because it's two different actors, James Earl Jones did the voice, someone else did the breathing sounds.

Yeah that still doesn't make sense.

I wonder how fucking weird that feels
Just talking and all of a sudden having your lungs filled up with air
I mean that’s gotta be off putting at first right?
