In the middle of the sixth century, a remarkable event occurred in all respects. An outbreak of an unknown disease was recorded in the Byzantine city of Pelusium, which quickly spread to the entire empire, and then to the rest of Europe and the Mediterranean. This disease became the very first of the epidemics known to us. In just a few decades, it took the lives of more than 100 million people, led to the decline of Byzantium, and served as a reason for the migration of many Eastern European peoples to new lands in search of salvation from the great disaster. This epidemic is called the Plague of Justinian. It changed the course of human history and led to the emergence of a new world order.
