"Failure to launch" kid - 30 years old still living with his parents, useless degree and doing dead-end jobs after having had an affluent upbringing and a certain amount of glory playing football. He wasn't making a transition into independent adulthood. I'm speculating he got into some kind of argument with his mother - maybe over his going nowhere in life? Maybe exacerbated by having a celebrity parent. He probably had issues they haven't made public - he snapped.
