I get what he’s saying and experienced it myself as narcissism. I was a “smart kid” and whatever didn’t come easy to me I ignored or reacted against in a nasty way. This is immaturity. In my late 20s I had a breakthrough and realized I’m not good at everything and that’s ok. Now I’m more patient and don’t fight everything and everyone when things don’t go my way. The point is that this lack of resilience is no trivial matter. It has real implications for one’s personal life and a company’s talent pool.

I think the implicit distinction here is, this doesn’t mean have low expectations for yourself discipline wise, but rather have low expectations for the outcome of your hard work.

It’s so true and especially those who went through life never having to experience downfalls, failures, or closed doors. You learn to pick yourself up to overcome obstacles, but those who have a smooth sail through life and unchanging high expectations crumble easily. Resilience definitely takes you much farther.

Love that pause after he says people with really high expectations have very low resilience. Pretty sure some young fellas there were stunned

People laughed at the end. But they wouldn't laugh if they had suffered in the way he's describing...because It sucks.

This is one of the few times I've seen Jensen seem sincere.

He’s saying you’re soft and in the real world despite having a high IQ matters nothing when you can’t persevere.

It's true that suffering can produce character if we see it in a positive way. But suffering can also make a person angry, hateful, bitter and lost.
I would say I wish a person mental and physical health and happiness.

To add a caveat on-top this lesson, do not end up like Icarus burning to close to the sun. Make calculated choices in your suffering & learn to know when to walk away. Easier said than done

Only pain and suffering makes a person mature and gain wisdom. Yes but with right amount, it should not be too severe that it destroys you or make long term suffering. Pain and suffering gave me so much that I can feel I have had enough to make me strong and go on the the rest of my life safely. But it was also too harsh that gave me mental disorder that am still working on to heal. So I hope upon people enough pain and suffering so that it benefits them later on but not destroy them in any way

Steps to quitting
1. Create high goals
2. Realizes limitation. Gets frustrated with self. Selfworth gets damaged.
3. Dont try to rememeber the experience of victory of overcoming adversity. (Every has adversity, although some are small)
4. Don't believe that things can improve one step at a time
5. Don't believe that countinous development will lift you up to reach goal.
6. Believe that accepting other's help is degrading.
5. Quit

This is the kindest way of roasting a large group of people that I've heard in a long time.
I appreciate this though--resiliance MATTERS!

High Expectations —> Low Resilience: So True!

We need to consider the issue of survivorship bias.
Survivorship bias is a logical fallacy that occurs when we only consider the results of a process while ignoring the failures. This can lead to a false impression of success, because we are not taking into account all of the attempts that were made.
I mean that we need to be aware that the results we see may not represent the whole picture, because we may be ignoring some data that has not been observed.

Beautiful philosophy. I agree .. strength and skillfulness comes from bad times. If you avoid bad times, life will be too scary for you

That is a very great point, great comes from character, who suffers and still holds on to what they believes, and solves the problem things standing in their way. Eventually they walk their way out and gains priceless experience.
