Star Citizen aims to span multiple video game types by combining space trading, space combat and shooter elements, in a first person massively multiplayer online game. Numerous content creators cover the ongoing situation to keep you informed and up to day. As an early backer and tester, you need to be ready for its quirks but you can also witness the game evolve.

You did not mention how they intend to optimize the large fleet battles. Faked lighting for weapons and cube mapped interiors will alleviate the load with little noticeable change in graphics (basically adding Spider-man windows to the 600i, for example). Overall lighting budget will not be a problem for fleet battles, which is in contrast to the unsourced claims from SCLeaks stating that the lighting budget would not scale to fleet battles.

Very interesting and really helped my understanding as a non-comp tech person of how these things work (and don't).

On the "no hard release" comment, I wish they would answer the question: Excluding future additions or tech changes to the game which are not part of the 'base game' is there a point at which all tech included in the base game will reach a post-beta stage, while simultaneously recognizing bugs are a part of any released game and fixes/balance will never be finished? Sure their are future things they are currently planning to do which I would think of as free post release DLC, but they must have some idea of what the core game functions will be and what a final stage would be for those items even if they plan to improve them in the future.

I find it odd that they were saying that performance may not improve on older cards. Though maybe it is because he hasn't been working on the part of the code that is really going to unlock a lot of performance on older cards.

We previously heard about that Gen12 had reduced the draw calls from 1/6th to 1/10th the number they are currently making to the cards. That is going to affect older cards more than newer cards.

The current rendering engine was designed for DirectX 9. Direct X10 and 11 support were tacked onto that old rendering system. The only problem is that DriectX 10 and 11 really changed how they render scenes to be more efficient. The CryEngine did not see any of these API improvements because it was still treating rendering like it was made for Direct X9.

Vulkan and DirectX 12 completely overhauled the graphics API pipeline again to be more in line with how graphics cards work internally, to make rendering even more efficient and also allowed the graphics API to use more than one CPU thread.

CIG's Gen12 renderer is designed to take advantage of all the the advances made in Vulkan and DirectX 12. Currently they do not plan to support DirectX 12. It also breaks the main rendering thread into multiple threads meaning if you have the CPU threads to spare, it will be able to feed the graphics API information faster.

Once the Gen12 renderer is completely in, the graphics side will run much faster. They can dump all the legacy rendering code, eliminating the multiple passes done right now to allow both to co-exist as they transition systems over. Also the Gen12 renderer is much closer to what DirectX 11 wants, than the old renderer. Vulkan will add even more performance as that is what the Gen12 renderer is made to support, and it will the graphics API will be multithreaded.

Basically, if you have more CPU threads, Star Citizen is going to start using them, and start taxing them.

My old Intel Core I7-4770k has 4 cores 8 threads. In the past I would look at the usage, and the main thread would be at 100%, the 2nd thread would be at maximum 50%, the 3rd thread would get to about 25%, and the 4th thread may get to 1%, with 4 threads sitting idle. That is only about 1/3rd of my CPU being utilized.

They keep mentioning that the main thread is one of the main problems with FPS right now though. Something this team isn't working on. Though we know that there are teams working on ripping the main thread apart into multiple threads as well.

IT IS FRIDAY and the best way to end the week is a great video from the Noob!

So I’m using less than a fifth of my GPU RAM, oh well. Excited for Ray Tracing possibilities.

0:30 They've been talking about gen 12 for six years, to be more exact. IIRC it was first brought up in 2016 - making just gen 12 in itself about as old as No Man's Sky.

Looking forward to these new design features. It's a exciting time of to be on the cutting edge of a tech development.

High-res texture pack; there's already so much detail, I'd like to see that.

I already noticed a big increase for myself. I’m getting a pretty solid average 70fps even in microtech sometimes it’s even hitting 110 fps and before this patch I never reached 60

Thank you once again for the great breakdown! Was there any word on VR? Not sure if this is the team but I noticed one behind on the white piano... Also, I am a big linux fan so I hope CIG finds a solution for anti cheat that is not just winblows based. Knowing how awesome linux is in managing system resources, SC on linux might turn out to be a small revolution in the gaming world.
