When laptops come in to my repair shop with an upper hinge problem, I never replace with the same type of part. I offer an "ugly but strong" approach.

Make a metal plate, with threaded holes to match hinge mount holes (may need to make another plate if the holes are the large style) and affix it to the lid on the outside. Then clamp it down with some screws (from the inside to the outside) and grind off any protruding screw ends. I usually cover the plate with epoxy so it looks a little less ugly. Modify the screen bezel as necessary to accomodate the fix (sometimes it just fits, sometimes you have to cut away a portion).

I have been doing this a few years and have never had a failure. I've had customers bring their laptop in for unrelated work years after doing this, and it stays as strong as the day they picked it up.

Used to do a bunch of these repairs. What was noticed was that the fan placement is typically close to one hinge and the heat overtime would dry out the lubrication to the point where the torque of opening and closing would rip those studs out. The laptop would feel like normal but then taken apart you could barely move the hinge. Fun stuff.

Its shameful that at the price point of these laptops you can’t even get solid metal construction where it counts

I have been fixing hinges in my shop for over year now... I found hot glue very very useful because you can melt it anytime you want to repair... But use hot air gun at 100-150°C. At that temperature you can never melt the plastic or deform it anyhow

The design is what we called a “planned obsolence”.

I had a similar issue with my Lenovo Ideapad twice and my technician saved me by improvising a way to fix it rather than me having to import the part.

I had the same device and both hinges broke within 4 months then it completely died after 12 months.

plastic is usually ABS and you can use acetone to chemically weld the plastic then make filled using scrap abs and acetone to reinforce the area, but no shop will do that for you.

fun fact if you cover the two protrusions above and below the h and the p in the hp logo, it just says "no". this is a reference to the fact that buying this product was a mistake.

HP: “Hewlett-Packard”; “Huge Problem”; “Hinge Problem”; etc

In my work we have a phrase that "HP stands for 'horrible product.'"

you should have strengthened the hinge of new part, I saw some use advanced adhesive on it to avoid future separation...
