"when people touch my hair I touch theirs back" my new strategy

i went to japan last year in the summer with my mom, and while we were visiting osaka, i felt a gentle tug on the back of my head, and for some reason i thought it was a bug so i raised my hand intending to slap but when i turned around, it was a cute elderly group, and they were fawning over my hair, kept saying it was so cute and very curly, and they even asked for a photo with me and my mom! i was so flustered at the end, but they were so polite : )

I actually enjoyed it when Japanese spoke to me in English.
Ever consider they might want to work on their English as much as you'd like to work on your Japanese?

I think it's extremely impolite to touch a strangers hair...
I had a similar experience in Tokyo and also in Beijing, but one time (which was additionally the first time a stranger did something like that) I had someone literally PULL my hair. That man didn't say anything, he was just walking by and looked strangely at me. I understand that it's strange for some people to have long and colorful hair, but I would never neglect my manners to such extremes, even if it's just curiosity.
Generally I am a very polite and somehow slightly reserved person, so I really don't get such behavior. seriously. In my opinion something like this creates a very negative image, especially when I am a tourist in another country. I'm german and learning the language of the countries I travel to is a thing which I enjoy a lot, but situations like this really leave me speechless:/

We got lost couple of times when we were in Japan. Luckily we got saved by nice Japanese people every single time. We didn't go to them, they came to us and politely asked us if we needed any help. :) Apparently my face is easily readable and I make good confused and lost facial expressions :)

I know it's not the main topic of the video but I have to say... the black girl is absolutely beautiful.

Seriously, for anyone learning a language and being afraid of using it in conversations:
There are only two kinds of people you might be talking to: those who have actually tried learning another language and therefore have gone through the same struggle you are going through right now. They won't make fun of you. They will be helpful and happy that you are trying your best. The other kind are those who haven't learnt any language but their own and they have absolutely no right to complain about your language skills because you have already achieved that they haven't.

I have very big, curly/kinky hair and while in Japan, a man started to touch it while I was on the train. He didn't even speak to me, just reached out and touched it like a curious toddler and it was very rude and bizarre.

They speak english to her because she looks American. They speak japanese to the left girl because she looks more japanese.

They probabley talked to the black girl using English because she is black and she couldn't speak in Japanese. Many Japanese people tend to think this way.

Why do so many people in comments not understand that you need consent to touch someone's hair? Are those people ok with strangers just coming up and touching them? Or do they simply not have empathy?

all black people can totally relate. "dont touch my hair" even white peole still do that.

When I was in Tokyo people were incredible. If people even got the impression that we were lost they would come up to us and ask if they could help. We are both 6ft2 and around 200 lbs. My Japanese skills are minimal, I have been studying off and on for a few years but I am terrible. I felt really bad when people tried to talk to me and I couldn't understand them. I have been studying for an hour every night since we got back to America.

I enjoy your videos Yuta, it's interesting to see different perspectives.

I enjoyed this! It's pretty much exactly the same in China. I've lived in China for 7 years and people will respond to me in Chinese because I live in a rural area but if I go to Starbucks or some foreign place... People talk to me in English.

I have hear some Russians complain because they can speak Chinese and Russian but not English so it's quite frustrating for them.

I second her advice. Practice, practice, practice! That way you can improve, and you can better remember the Japanese you're memorizing. 皆さん、頑張って下さい!

When I was in japan Mainly people would speak to me in japanese but I would get english sometimes as well. I o nly had 1 instance where a person pretended not to understand me and a group of friends I was with. I even had an instance on the train where a women sitting next to me just started talking to me in Japanese asking me where I was from etc.

The getting ignored part ^^ First day I arrived to Tokyo I couldn't find my dorm, so after around 30 hours of exhausting travel I had the fun task to approach strangers in broken Japanese and ask for directions... Most of them just ignored me until I said Sumimasen like 3 times ^^
