How do United Nations sanctions work?

The U.S. is one of several countries that typically backs U.N. sanctions — but do those sanctions actually work?

Now Ihave a question and this is not a troll of any kind, I studied government for a semesters so it’s a political science question. Could a western nation be sanctioned? Say the US or Canada. I’m just curious if that could ever be done and if so what would it entail? And again this is not a troll comment I’m not spoiling for a fight, i’m just genuinely curious If that is a logistical possibility.

Somebody please explain this to me. How can the United States impose sanctions on any country they want? Which basically tells me that the U.S.A controls the entire world, by telling a country it can't export and import. Who gave America the power to be dicating whether a country and trade or not? Someone please explain this to me because its boggling my mind.

Sanctions can encourage and support stability in the sanctioned nation?

Countries that have been sanctioned always find ways around it with help from neighboring countries or those countries with religious ties or those that benefit economically, for example, Iran is sanctioned, it uses Iraq who the majority are Shia Muslims and China helps Iran to get oil at a reduced cost.
