How the Electro-Voice ND86 Mic Sounds for Live Solo Acoustic Gigs

When you're singing live you want a mic that fits your unique voice and vocal style. And I've been using the Shure Beta 58a mics for the past few years, which are great mics.

But I just got the Electro-Voice ND86 mics for my live acoustic solo gigs and trying them out for the first time at a live show (with you in this video).

***You can purchase the ND86 mic direct from Sweetwater (this is my affiliate link - thank you for the support!):

***You can get the specs and details of the EV ND86 mic here:

In the video, I share some clips from a recent live performance. I'm playing at one of my regular venues, Finn's Dockside in Apollo Beach, FL. This is such a cool place to play and also served as an awesome venue to test these new mics.

I also go through my setup and connections with the mics after the live performance clips as well as share some tips for playing live acoustic solo gigs.

At the end of the video, you'll find out if I will continue using the EV ND86 mics for my live gigs or if I'll go back to the Shure mics.

Keep Playing Music,
Jason

Thanks for the video, Jason. I have used the Blue EnCore 100i mics (yes, I know it's designed as an instrument mic) for a couple of years. I also use the EnCore 200 when I need to use my Mackie Mixer as they require phantom power. I have an EnCore 300 that is a full condenser mic, but I've only used it live one time. Does a good job in recording sessions, though. I have a band that I supply sound for, and I have a mix of the EnCore 100i, Encore 200 and Audix i5 mics. Most always running through a Mackie mixer and the Bose L1compact sound system.

Great Video Jason, I am using shure Beta 58A. Great mic and I think it works for me. Was thinking of changing to an sennheiser e945 as i hear they are good to but hard to know until I sing into one 👍🏽🎸

Hey Jason, that venue looks fantastic. Keep up these great videos 👍🏽 I’ve been using the Shure KSM8 recently. A beautiful sounding mic.

I wish I could sing and play at the same time, but I just can't remember the words LOL.

I owned the original EV N/D767a for years and when it finally failed I was horrified and was kicking myself for not getting a back-up when they were still in production. I didn't want to buy a used one so I researched and found the ND76 took it's place. I was seriously concerned nothing would come close to sound and feeling I felt using the N/D767a. I received the ND76 yesterday and gave it a go, it is even better than the original.

I see hear you have the 86. The 86 when described by EV says it's for large band performances and blocks out a lot of noise. The 76 is for folks like you and I who perform solo and IMO is so sensitive because it doesn't block noise is great for passing the feelings you put through it to the audience. If you haven' t tried the ND76 you may be passing on one of the best vocal mic's for solo performers. I haven' tried the 86 so who knows, they may be very similar. All I know is I'm buying another ND76 right away.

Love your

I'm a lead singer in this great cathedral, the Nieuwe Kerk where the ceilings are high. I use EV ND86 and it fills up the whole space.

I think these mics sound great. A lot of clarity. Although that could partially be the new array too. That thing sounds killer. I upgraded my mic recently from my tried and true SM58 that I’ve gigged with for 15 years and now I use a SE V7. I really like it.

I just got the ND96 and have to say it hasn't hit me like the Beta did. In fact it seemed kind of boxy on my voice and I felt like I needed to do eqing on it and I still haven't gotten it anywhere near the Beta. Weird thing is that I am using a EV 30 to amplify.

Great stuff Jason.
I hope someday I will have the balls to finally perform live.
Man that shit is scary in my mind.

Awesome video as always brother. I recently looked at a mackie profx board with compression, but cheaped out and bought a guitar center brand board with reverb and some effects but no compression. In your opinion, should I return the board and upgrade to the mackie that has compression, or run one of the mic pedals you mentioned that has compression?

Just started using an sm58. I love the iconic look, hard for me to hear a difference in a mic lol

Hey Jason, discovered your channel a few days ago and am loving your tips on gigging & gear advice! Was curious if you had a significant preference between your two Hercules guitar stands; the solid/curved one or the foldable one?

Unrelated question, but are you still loving the Boss WL-20 system with your Pod Go/guitars? I’m on the fence about cutting the cord and I wanted to check in with you. Thanks Jason!

I’m not getting the full direct recording of the mic. We hear a direct recording of the guitar but the video stops before we hear the microphone.
