Why I Became An ObGyn | Picking A Medical Specialty and why I tried NOT to love this field!

Today I'm discussing how I chose Obstetrics and Gynecology as my field of choice in medical school and why I tried REALLY hard to talk myself out of it. If you're a medical student trying to pick a specialty, maybe this will help you. If you're a person outside of medicine I hope it gives you a little insight into why we do what we do - hint: it's not for the money or the great working hours.

My ob/gyn treats my grandma and my mom. She has treated my mom sense before I was born so when I walked into my first appointment for birth control for period cramps and a breast exam when I was 13 she greeted me as "hi, I'm wendy, I'm the one that watched you grow in your mom's womb. " then went on so say how old she feels treating 3 generation of women.

Can you do a video about pregnancy/labor & delivery for victims of sexual assault and their options? There doesn't appear to be a ton of information online about it.

Not sure how I missed this video before, but this was exactly what I needed to hear today. Not in medical school, but in career transition and getting some shade from my family. "I wanted to do with my hands, listen with my ears, and be involved with my heart and just take care of people." Mama Doctor Jones is goals.

Love watching your videos. You’re so real. I want to be an OB/GYN now, but whoopsies... I’m 60. 😆

I so wish I could ask my father in law what prompted him to go into OBGYN. He’s been gone since 2004, and we STILL meet people who tell us how much they loved him. The funny thing was that when he was still in Turkey, he was into boxing, and when they moved to the US, he got into working with the Olympic boxing team and became the team physician, and the guys had a field day introducing him as their personal OBGYN! 😜

I just wanted to say that you're the reason I started medical school with a newborn and am going into OB. Thank you so much for being you 💖

Hi Dr. Jones, I just matched to ObGyn and was watching your videos as motivation to keep studying for my final two shelf exams before I am DONE with medical school and can finally do what I LOVE! You have been such as inspiration to me for the last four years!! I had a baby in med school and you were the first ObGyn I found online who helped me get the courage to go for this field! Thank you so much for putting yourself out there!! All the best!!

You remind me of my OBGYN. She is so sweet and kind and I was actually sad after the birth of my 3rd child that I wouldn't see her as much. Shes been my ob since I found out I was pregnant in 2011 and of course I still see her at my yearly appointment or if I am having issues. Shes so sweet and asks about the kids and cares so much. I am glad you love doing your job, because I know you are that doctor for someone else out there who feels like finding a good doctor is so hard.

Thanks for sharing! I'm an undergrad pre-med student right now. OB/GYN is what made me want to go into the medical field but I'll see where life brings me when I go to medical school!

Thanks for sharing! I too was like you. In my early part of medical school I thought I would do peds because I love kids (so I thought, I just love my own kid, lol) but then I learned quickly that I hated the parents. I loved, loved, loved my ob rotation and too was discouraged about it being a specialty that doesn’t allow family balance but I trusted my gut and followed my heart and went for it. I also love “doing” things and working with my hands. I am not sure how you did it with having kids in residency but I had my son 4 years into private practice and once I had my son things changed. I wanted to be that mom who was able to pick up and drop off their kid at daycare and knew I was going to be able to do it and it wasn’t just a maybe depending on how things were at the hospital. I love the relationships with my patients, but I love my family more. I felt like I wasn’t being all I could be for my patients because I was rushing to go home and be with my family and I felt like I wasn’t being all I could be to my family because even though I was at home (and on call) my mind was on the patient at the hospital. I still love ob/gyn and I don’t regret my decision because I couldn’t imagine being anything else. I decided to quit private practice and as of March this year I am a Ob/Gyn Hospitalist. It is still fun and I can still be a great doctor even though I may only know the patient for a few days while they are in the hospital . But now I feel like I can be a great doctor to patients while I am a work and a great mom and wife to my family while I am at home and I am 100% present for both when I need to be.

I'm a newly graduated doctor and I've been struggling so much with whether or not to go into OBGYN. Still not sure what I want to do but this helped a lot

I am in a completely different field ( Im a high school teacher lol) but the advice about doing what you love is so important! There are always reasons not to do something and lots of worry to go around but when you follow your curiosity and take it step by step it works out somehow...magically:)

I have no idea how I came upon your channel and I generally don’t have a lot of interest in medicine, but you are so entertaining and educational i can’t stop watching! Thank you for doing what you do!

This video was really helpful. I'm almost on my last year of medical school and I really want to be an OBGYN but everyone is so discouraging about it (even most of the OBGYNs I've talked to at the hospital). So thank you for this, I really needed someone saying that you can be a OBGYN and still have a life and a family outside the hospital.

I live next door in Arkansas and we call that a true calling. You were called to do what you do. I encourage everyone to listen for that calling. Especially if they feel called to rheumatology! Lol Arkansas needs them desperately, trust me!
