The issue with this feature is when a phone is physically or liquid damaged and Face ID fails, it makes data recovery harder for specialists like us. Since the phone must power on with Face ID to access data, recovery becomes more complex and costly. We often advise customers to avoid using this feature if their data is important and not backed up regularly.

For context: This is usually best for situations whereby your phone has been stolen by someone who has been looking over your shoulder, thus knows you padd code. This allows them to steal it, then take over the whole phone, lock you out & empty bank accounts etc. This feature means, when away from home you need face id to be able to make key changes, furthermore it starts a 1 hour limit before you can make changes using the passcode. That ideally should give you enough to time to report the phone stolen via 'find my' & lock it etc. That's what this is designed for. Doesn't really help with the usual robbery, in this case your phone is still gone, won't be coming back..but at least they don't have full control of your bank apps, photos & every other thing...whilst locking you out of yoru apple ID forever. This update was Apple's response to this growing trend of crime.
