I remember in the early years of being in elementary school, the boys and girls naturally self-segregated for most of the recess period. Girls wanted to play with girls and boys wanted to play with boys. Maybe sometimes there'd be a game that everyone wanted to play together, but there seemed to be a natural (fitrah) desire to spend the majority of our social time with children of the same gender.
