At the time it made sense. Every character in action movies was clad in leather, even though it is impractical in most cases. That being said theres no reason why it had to stay that way throughout their run.

Batman and robin had a pretty big impact on comic book movies. It flopped so hard that people were kind of afraid to make super hero movies with comic book feel. They were afraid comic accurate costumes would seem too childish. This persisted up until pretty recently. Even in the mcu so many costumes weren't as colorful as the comics. Most notably captain America falcon and hawkeye. I was really hyped when we got a pretty well comic accurate mysterio in Spider-Man far from home. Also black manta in aquaman with his big goofy flying saucer helmet. To me its a huge step up from the muted colors of man of steel superman and arrow getting rid of the green altogether.
