"I don't intend to do a whole lot of 'Let Me Tell You About My Game' videos." - Matt Colville, a man with 45 videos in his 'Campaign Diaries' Playlist

Lmao I laughed so hard when the one girl paused after introducing her priest and then said...."now turned vampire" hesitantly

I'm about to start a campaign with a group of six (!) players who are mostly completely new to d&d. When I saw the title of this video I thought; "Cool, I think I'll post this in our facebook group". Then I watched it myself.. I watched it and I smiled and I laughed. I laughed a crazed, evil laugh as I picked up the monster manual and started looking for monsters with the ability to change it's form... My players will never see this video.

You are EXACTLY the reason of all the effort i put on being a DM.

"Let me tell you about my campaign" videos are great. Perhaps a D&D Stories series here on youtube? I imagine it would be successful.

If you read the captions, then they're rushing to stop Carol from summoning orcas. Orcas is bad news.

Which I find unfair to the poor whales.

Coming back to this now I have to say I LOVE the unknowing, innocent, and trusting baby Lars. You now understand why he has become skeptical adult Lars, always assuming the Colville screw is right around the corner.

Got that look from my players once. They were adventuring some while in a city near the sea, with a haunted island near by. A local cult of the Spider Queen had been trying to free their goddess on the island for some time, but without luck. They decided to infiltrate the group by hiring a unknown actor just in from a major city. He befriends them, helping them out and a is great addition to the party with his minor healing powers. They are fighting through the caves below the island and finds at some point a strange large key. Later they face a large group of cultists. The Half-Orc Barbarian hands over the key to their new friend. "Keep this safe while I'm fighting!". He then hands it over to the bad guys and is collecting his payment for his services. They all looked at me. "No fucking way!" Epic moment.

As a lady D&D player, I'm so glad to see you have some female players for the updated campaign! I'm currently in a campaign with four ladies and only one chap, and it's great fun! Every other campaign I've ever been in, I've either been the only woman, or one of only two. It's awesome that girls and women are embracing D&D.

Had to rewatch this after the betrayal video. One of the greatest DnD stories I've ever heard

I think you should do more "this is my campaign" videos. Hearing about things that have happened in your games help me think of new ideas and are also extremely entertaining

Fun life hack:
1) Watch this video and enjoy it
2) Half-forget it and go about your day
3) 5-6 years later, randomly decide to finally check out the DnD stream that one YouTube man you like did before the Plague Times
4) Get hooked, binge first four episodes
5) Hear a player utter the phrase “This is like when Robbie was the slaad”
6) Experience the satisfaction of understanding a reference
7) Rewatch original video with expanded context
8) idk, profit???

Hey I know Red! He used to work with me at Carbine right around the corner. Actually I think Turtle Rock is like 5 minutes from my house. Small world.

I play DND because It Lets me be someone different. I have stage 4 cancer, and I am 67 years old. Now I can be a 16 year old druid and do things I can not do in reality. LOVE this game.

I've experienced this kind of moment twice.

I'm a graphic designer. I've drawn since I've been old enough to hold a pencil. So every character I roll gets a character sketch. My last character had died a horrible death, so I had rolled a new one. My character sketch - in full colour - was on top of my character sheet and on the table. I should have put my Player's Handbook on top of it or something, but the other players saw it.. Now they knew what to look for.
So the DM hatched a plan. He set up an encounter with an enemy that looked _similar_ to my character, but not the same. He had me RP that character, and had him set up an ambush by waiting beside a campfire. When the other characters approached, I engaged in conversation. At the DM's signal, I yelled for the ambush to start. Then the DM took over. That taught both myself and the others a lesson. Be careful where you lay secret information, and don't metagame.

In that very same campaign, our party was desperately trying to stop a cult from summoning an Elder God, all the while being hunted by this cult. An oracle warned us: "Where you are know, you are in danger." Not 30 minutes later, the Bard in our group was in a local tavern singing songs about who we were and our exploits
So..again...the DM hatched a plan. He knew the players were trying to recruit another friend to the table, but this friend wasn't big in fantasy RPGs. The DM had him sit in one night, much to the excitement of the rest of us, but he wasn't playing a character.... What he was playing was revealed when his "character" approached the Bard and said...in his best "Schwartzenegger accent"..."Are you Sparrow, Singer of Songs?"
"Yes!" replied the bard, smiling.
At which point he was grabbed and thrown through two wood walls and out of the tavern. The DM then hammered his fist on the table in the Terminator 2 drum riff. "DUM-DUM, DUM, DUM-DUM...DUM-DUM, DUM, DUM-DUM..."
The look of horror on our faces was priceless. Our friend ran the Terminator for the DM during the encounter.
The lesson learned? Listen to the GD oracle, you stupid Bard.

Matthew, I realy dug your story. This, indeed, is what makes D&D great. We've had equally cool stories in Shadowrun, but to be fair, it was the same group of players with the same great chemistry, just with one the players and the DM switching chairs.

That story was awesome, I would love to hear more like it. You're videos are very motivating and inspiring. You have a talent for making me feel a lot less worried about my ability to DM a game.

P.S. Your videos are very high quality and well edited, you have a great channel.

The smile on my face when I figured out what was going on, even before you had said it, was priceless. Truly epic.

That... That was epic. Thank you for sharing this with us.
I'm building a whole world which I might never really use... But it is so much fun.
