So, in this scenario, the players are hard core RAW rules lawyers when they make the claim that the peasants could pass the spear to the guy at the front in the span of 6 seconds, but the rules are suddenly up for interpretation when the spear still just does 1d6 of damage.

The spear travels to the last person at a relative 3, 409 mph, then the man at the end throws it at a normal speed, to a normal distance, for base damage

It's a shame 'velocity' isn't part of the damage calculation. That's a lot of effort for 1d6 damage.

Unfortunately it still only deals 1d6 damage to the dragon, but I'd definitely give the peasant advantage on the attack roll

If I'm gonna be pedantic about preparing actions and turns lasting 6 seconds, my DM will be pedantic about it dealing 1d6 damage

As a DM I would make you roll a dexterity check for each peasant to pass this rapidly accelerating spear and Increase the DC as it gets closer to rail gun speeds. If you roll a 1. . . let's just say it would be better if that happened sooner than later.

Raw the first part works, but also raw the last peasant would just be throwing a spear

I've had this happen, I ruled that from about the 50th or so peasant onwards started to suffer wounds, while the 500th just got turned into meat as well as the next hundred. That Campaign went a way different and fun way after.

Although you can do this, there is no rule saying that a spear traveling at 3000 miles per hour does any more damage than a spear traveling at 20 miles an hour. Have fun doing 9 damage with a spear going at thousands of miles an hour.
