Hi Guys
I have had a passat GTE estate here in Sweden for some time and have had this exact same problem.
The dealers have updated the software in the mechatronics unit 3 times.
They have replaced the mechatronics twice.
They have changed the oil type used in the mechatronics once to no avail as the problem kept coming back.
Then I started to realise that the issue came back roughly 2 weeks after each attempt to fix it.
This is VERY significant as this gearbox / mechatronics unit learns your driving style and programmes itself based on what it has learnt.
It was only after this process had happen that fault showed up.
Every time the dealer carried out a fix they defaulted the software which lost these settings so it took 2 weeks for the vehicle to learn it again then the fault shows up again.

So I told the dealer that I do not believe the fault is with the mechatronics but with some other part of the system i.e. the gearbox itself or the clutch pack.
I then told them that I would not accept anything other than a complete gear system change i.e. gearbox .. mechatronics and clutch pack.

They did carry out this change after a lot of discussion with VW.
I have now had the car on the road for more than 2 months with no further problems and I am a happy bunny. :-)

Hello eveyrone in the comments, this is probably the one of the only common faults on the GTE/Etron. Its a defective mechatronics unit, the juddering sound is coming from the clutch. When the mechatronic unit is failing it cannot control the bite point of the clutch anymore which causes it to judder. This only happens in reverse. Another way to tell you mechatronics unit is failing is when you feel a shock when the engine kicks in. It is fairly normal if this happens when the gearbox and engine are cold, but when they are warm it should all be smooth.

My 66 plate Passat GT E’s gearbox broke down, the dealership is costing me 15 grand to fix it, because they have to take the batteries out then take the engine out then fixed the gearbox and it’s going to take 15 hours of labour work. It’s out of warranty and VW doesn’t want to know about it, even though It done only 55, 000 miles. London

I had to change my mechatronix unit as well. Luckily it was inside the warranty.

My 66 Reg for GTE’s gearbox broke down, apparently the clutch is stuck and something else to do with the oil pressure pump. VW dealer is quoting me 14 K to fix the gearbox. Because they have to take the engine out and the electric battery out and it will take 15 hours of labour work..
And it is only done 55, 000 miles and out of manufacturers warranty. VW do not want to help out in anyway..

Has the issue been resolved?
I recently bought a used Golf GTE and I haven’t even driven more than 1000 miles and I get the same rattling sound. I don’t know if it is from the Electric Motor or the Engine.

Hi mate, I have just ordered one of these. I know that the auto handbrake only works if you have your seatbelt on and was just wondering if that was causing the issue?

Also: I see you have the new touchscreen centre console, is that standard now or did you add it as an option?
